I recently bought a 1999 Chevy Express van. When I bought it, I was paranoid because it had close to full tank of gas. I was thinking, people do not sell a vehicle that has a full tank of gas. Mind you, this van was dropped off to be auctioned off. Usually, people will want to run the gas gauge down to 1/4 or something before they sell car or drop it off to be auctioned off. Gas costs $$$ after all. I had figured that gas gauge was broken. I filled up the van and had to put 3 gallon in it so it must have had gas.

See, I thought that maybe gas gauge was stuck at 'F'. Drove a little bit, then drove it from Michigan to Chicago and saw that gas gauge does work!!!

That's a relief. I thought you meant you ate too many beans.

It could be repossed and yes, tank can be full when possessed, that is when previous owner least expected.
Simple check Carfax and you may find something. Who knows?
My Cherokee has total of 7 serious accidents on Carfax and I have ZERO problem with my Cherokee and still driving over 10 years.

If you're worried about your car's history... always check CARFAX!!!

If you get a car with a full tank, then it's probably because the person who had it before was very considerate or the place you bought it from has a policy of ensuring that all vehicles are fully gassed.

I wish more people would fill their cars up every time they drop off a rental car! It's usually 20% of the cars that come full, with the rest being 1/4 or 1/2.

Here's what I don't understand... why charge the driver a fee for returning the car with less gas then when picked up... but don't bother putting gas in the car for the next person?

Person A gets the car with a full tank... then returns it with 3/4 a tank. They charge $10 for 3 gallons. Person B rents that car with 3/4 a tank... then returns it with 1/2 a tank. They charge $10 for 3 gallons. Person C rents that car with 1/2 a tank... then returns it with 1/4 a tank. They charge $10 for 3 gallons. So, they profited $30 without bothering to add gas.

I think that after a long flight on plane, I think a person would love to get in car and drive and drive. I don't think that they want to have to go to first corner gas station. The less stop, the better.

Yeah, I agree that they should fill the car up. I just cannot figure why they charge for gas and not fill it up.
