Deaf people and registered nurses.

My doctor is deaf...other one is also deaf but no longer work at the dr's office.

There is a link about few doctors around in Rochester's area. I'll pull up and post in here.

Deaf people CAN do anything. I have few friends that got PHD and other one is going for it...So there nothing to stop deafies goiing into any kind of career! Whatever what career make her/him happy, her/his dream, etc.

I do however believe that deaf people can be nurses and even become a doctor if they are motivated to become one and have the passion instilled. There are so many tools that can help a deaf nurse be accessible to begin with. I have met and known some deaf nurses which is great. There is a deaf guy who I used to date with - He is an EMT and he says he has entercountered alot of the issues which makes him works twice than the other fellow EMTs does. He also has said that there were questions asked like "How can you hear the stetscope?", "How can you hear the breathings?", so and on. You get the picture.

I am also aware that there are alot of skepticals about wondering how the deaf nurse can deal with the daily basis trying to work with a patient that has no knowledge of how to deal with a deaf person but, that's part of the challenge and there are ways to make it work by using different resources or tools to break down the communication barrier.

:gpost: You made alot of good points there and I agree ;)

I have a friend who works as a RN nurse now. She is hoh and worked as EMT and LVN in emergency room. Then she decided to go back to medical school to become RN. The school said she must be able to hear like hearing ppl do so she was required/or had to get CI to attend that medical school. Im not sure if that is the requirement only in California or all over the USA.

Deaf people can do anything... within limitations.

If you can't hear, you'll probably be restricted from duties that involve hearing 100% of the time.

Actually you got me remind about one deaf woman who working EMT still ongoing... used to be w/her partner along each together communcation went well smooth and no troublings.. I think she is living in Wisc or other state... Im not sure anyway.... Pretty awful long time when I was stayed w/her place for a week.. Right now, She's no longer working EMT and decide to change her career. I assume sure American Chopper know who she is...

I see. I think it's really awesome that deaf people are able to work in the EMT, Nursing, Doctoring field It might would make it easier for the deaf patients as well with the communication barrier which is a plus :)
