Cops Stop Car Bomb From Exploding in Times Square

Mayor Bloomberg along with NYPD Commissioner are responsible for NYC's safety. These massive police appearance everywhere, sergeant drill (weekly drills of dozens of police cars mobilizing from point A to point B) and vigilance are his on-going work.
Yes, he has accomplished a lot but he didn't prevent this bombing attempt.

I seem to recall that there were a few terrorist attacks on American soils since 2009, although none after 9/11 through 2008. One didn't cause any fatalities or injuries (except for the bomber) and the other produced 14 fatalities. Hmm...what else am I forgetting. Ooh, yeah, this recent terrorist attack attempt in NYC just a few days ago.
And it's barely been a year so far.

You're right. A couple of NYC cops unwittingly stumbled onto this and scared the terrorist away, just moments away from detonation.

not interested in attempt. it was foiled. prevented.

actually - the t-shirt vendor reported suspicious activity to NYPD when he saw the smoke coming out of van. So he notified the officer on horse (mounted cop). he smelled the gunpowder so the evacuation began.....

so I don't know where you're getting info about 2 cops unwittingly stumbled onto it.... :dunno:

If the bomb had detonated as planned, there could have been many casualties. It's a good thing that the bomb was a dud. Now they have the suspect in custody, and all the material evidence intact. They should be able to conduct a deep and wide investigation with all that evidence.

The suspect, Faisal Shahzad, a 30 year-old Pakistani-American (and a Democrat?), was arrested for the attempted bombing in Times Square. He almost got away, too. In the process of his arrest two other people were taken off the plane as well.

an insight for ya'all from a person who has been going to New York since 1980's and weathered thru 2 major terrorist attacks, dozens of airline crashes (ie. US Airways), and several terrible shootings.

If ya'all think it's just a pure luck that we just happened to see a suspicious vehicle in Times Square.... you're wrong. dead wrong. This is not a case of randomness and pure luck. What happened here is the vigilance and security protocol from fellow New Yorkers and NYPD. We have already been thru terrorist attacks so don't you think we know a thing or two better than ya'all when it comes to terrorism in major metropolitan?

In Times Squares - it has strict parking/traffic regulation. This vehicle was parked in a very suspicious and conspicuous manner. This prompted the vendors to notified the officers.

In high-value area - it is filled with cops, cameras, and vigilant watchers. the parking is strictly enforced to protect car bomb or related from inflicting a heavy casualty during busy hours. Trucks are not allowed on certain roads, highways, and bridges during certain hours. Trucks/Garbage Trucks/Large rental trucks/vehicle w/ trailers are not allowed to go thru any tunnels and lower level George Washington Bridge. Everyday I pass thru GWB - I see a truck being pulled over for interrogation and closer inspection. I can see why it was suspicious - it had no license, hazard sign, or anything.

If you go to Wall Street - it has police check point. Dozens of NYPD cars equipped with cameras on both sides are placed strategically to scan the license plates as cars pass by. All bridges and tunnels have beefed up police appearance.

Like I said - no terrorist attack so far since 2001 :cool2:

I agree, NYC is much more hypervigilant than other places toward terrorism. Last time I was in NYC, I noticed how much presence is there. Its definately a place I think terrorists see as their most desired location to inflict damages.

Getting a bit wee steep in there with that "analysis?"

That wasn't the intent of mine. It is incorrect to say that "Dougie" sounds phonetically like "doggie." That's where the error is...and the pettiness goes. I didn't bring it up. Though you get the usual apoplectic fit around here.
;)

"Bullies and comedians like to deliberately mispronounce" for "a rather blatant & insidious insult" purpose.

apoplectic fit, eh? hmmm.... *looking at several threads* well I hope your blowout preventer is in working order :giggle:

Well, the guy IS a registered Democrat. That isn't bashing the Democrats. It just shows that he wasn't a Tea Party nut, which is what some of the early speculation was.

Pure luck. There are not enough cops to cover every 100 square foot in NYC.

Today, the number of police officers for NYC is 34,500.
NYPD - Frequently Asked Questions

Ten years ago it was at 40,800 police officers.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/20/nyregion/20police.html

Since 2008 it has dropped 1,000 police officers to currently at 34,500.

NYC is 305 square miles or 8,502,912,000 square feet. That leaves on average one cop for every 500 square feet. But then again not all cops are on the street at the same time. So, that drives the square feet number much higher. More like one cop for every 2,000 square feet (or more). That's 1 cop per city block. Even if you focus them in high value areas (all of NYC is a target) it still doesn't help since some will be responding to emergencies, investigating calls, issuing traffic violations and so on. So, yes, in a word, pure luck. Even the cops who were a part of the incident said so.

One of the cops said, "We got lucky this time. That's all I'll say. Sometimes we get lucky."

The cop, who didn't want his name in the paper, nodded in the direction of 45th St., where all the action was the night before. He said, "That's it, that's all it takes. One car. It's New York, people can park anywhere. Guy gets out of a parked car, walks away, leaves a bomb behind. That's what we're up against, every single day."

Times Square car bomb scare: Disaster averted thanks to alert New Yorkers - and some luck

Once again, it was pure, pure luck at play here. And we should be so fortunate. This is same exact thing with the 1993 explosion. You drive a vehicle (any size). Park it. Walk away. No one would be the wiser. And then.....yep.

Pure luck. There's no denying this. The cops admitted to this and realize what they are up against. Let's hope this will never, ever happen.

um..... we don't need cops on every 100 square foot.... because NYC is one of the safest big city in America. :cool2:

# of NYPD Officer was reduced but # of NYPD Traffic Cops increased (for parking ticket duty). This enables NYPD officer to walk & inspect each car for anything suspicious. regular NYPD officer does not do this. NYPD has many divisions. We already have plenty enough for any emergency purpose.

I find it funny that you're professing to know more than me especially when I have been here for over 25 years. I have personally seen thru many changes that NYC went thru. It went from mafia-controlled, whore-infected, drug-infected area into Times Square. You might want to come by and see that a lot has changed since the last time you were here. :cool2:

I hosted AD Party right here in the heart of NYC and they have seen the difference.

cops?

One of the cops said, "We got lucky this time. That's all I'll say. Sometimes we get lucky."
In case you didn't know - it's just a figure of speech... like "Thanks God it didn't blow up." Beside - this officer wasn't there in the first place. The mounted cop was and he's a hero for identifying the situation and acting on it quickly.

ever since 1993 - why do you suppose that there has been no TRUCK BOMB? no car bomb? Is it a pure luck that this particular car bomb was put together like a 11 years old amateur with chemistry set? Is it pure luck that no terrorist has been able to construct a sophisticated car bomb or any destructive bomb in here for more than 15 years?

What action did the police do that prevented the car bomb from exploding when it was ignited?

a better question - what action did NYC take to prevent any car/truck bomb from exploding in NYC? what action did the police take to apprehend this suspect in a very short time?

Here are the facts that "get in the way" on which groups are the terrorist ones that happened within, already, a year's time:

1. Najibullah Zazi's subway plot...
Najibullah Zazi NYC Subway Plot: Al Qaeda Threat Looms - ABC News
2. Major Nidal Hassan–14 dead people with 30 wounded...
3. The dirty crotch bomber...
4. The Times Square bumbler....

The Mayor of NYC is an idiot to even suggest on air about who might be the person of question. The MSM secretly had hoped it wouldn't be a person with Islamic ties. Guess what. All of them did (or has). So far, 3 out 4 were unsuccessful attacks. What are the odds that these terrorists won't stop?

Zilch.

What action did NYC take to prevent THAT car bomb from exploding?

what action did the police take to apprehend this suspect in a very short time?
So if the bomb had not malfunctioned, it would have blow up. There is nothing the police did to prevent that from happening.

I'm not slighting the police. They did everything right in their investigation and clearing of the streets. However, it wasn't anything that they did that prevented the car from blowing up. The car full of explosives was not stopped from entering the area and parking. The police did not prevent the bomb from detonating.

But you must admit, they did "indirectly" prevent the bomb from detonating.
