Cops Stop Car Bomb From Exploding in Times Square

How do you prevent terrorism?

many ways but I'll elaborate more on one part. in act of terrorism - you need 3 things. money. resource (tools and manpower). training.

what we saw here is poor funding, poor resource, and poor training. Since 9/11 - we cut off the funding and put more eyes on the street. since we cut off the funding, that leads to loss of resource and training. nothing is free in "terrorism business". the more trained the person is, the brighter he will appear in intelligence community's radar. This forced terrorist organization to recruit unqualified terrorist-to-be with unqualified mindset and provide unreliable training. It's basically - "just drive to there and then light it up. that's it. allah akbur"

This is why the underwear bomber, shoe bomber, car bomber failed. they all had poor funding and poor training. and they all shared similarity - young, scared & misguided men with wrong mentality for terrorist.

Because of severe reduction in terrorist organization's capability, they have employed a classic old strategy that doesn't cost them much but does cost us a tremendous amount of money - fear. FFFFEEEEEAAAARRRRRRRRRR!

anyway - the most important part is that we have emergency protocol for terrorist attacks. it is organized, speedy, and prepared. that's the best we can do. be prepared for it. and that's why this car bomber was caught. we were prepared and we knew how to do it fast. NYC's budget for this kind of thing is pretty hefty. $$$$$$$$$$$

Yes, although you know nothing is 100% foolproof or preventable.

How do you prevent terrorism?
Acts of terrorism can be prevented through intelligence gathering and security implementation.

Prevention means stopping the action before it happens.

There will never be 100% prevention.

nope. best we can do is... keep your eyes open and watch your 6. report any suspicious activity. and that's what we did. we New Yorkers did our job and we are not afraid.

2 WTC attacks. 2 Times Square bombings. we are undeterred.

today - May 5, 2010 - 12:11pm - Times Square :cool2:

*hint* - you're looking at the pix where there was a car bomb. at the right side.

yes ma'am - I am indeed glad he was caught but you're being shortsighted on prevention part. We already have dozens of reports on terrorist wanting to blow up Holland Tunnel, synagogues, Amtrak, Metro (subway), and more. Nothing new. Nothing happened.
Good. Those attacks were prevented.

That has nothing to do with the Times Square event. That attack was not prevented from happening. The scope of the attack was mitigated by the failure of the bomb to explode. The failure of the bomb was not a result of police action.

It's not a slight on the police to state that they didn't prevent that from happening, so there's no need to defend them. They didn't do anything wrong; their response was spot on. I just wouldn't call that prevention.

Prevention would mean something like not allowing him to park there, or not allowing him to buy the bomb materials. That would be prevention.

Yes, but it's not always reliable. Some are completely under the radar.

Prevention means stopping the action before it happens.

Yep.

Actually, they didn't catch him in the act. He was long gone from the scene when he was caught. He was on the run when he was caught.

Correct. It was people who saw a man fleeing from the SUV. Still doesn't discount the fact there was an attempt to detonate it. Nothing preventative about that.

That is the suspect???? He has a full head of hair while in the video the suspect clearly has a receding hairline and a huge bald patch at the back of his head.

you have misunderstood. The video is showing someone that they said could have been taking off the outer layer of cloths to disquise themselves or it could have just been someone that was hot and sheding a layer of clothing to cool down. I don't think the person in the video ever became a suspect.

So you're not sure? Dang.
Maybe I shouldn't have posted it, but in my defense, I just came back from the dentist.

If I remember correctly the face photo was taken off one of the social sites (facebook or something). could be an old photo.

well - that would mean we'll have to take drastic measure like not allowing any vehicles in Times Square. if that's what NYC wants - go ahead. Either way - it is still not allowed to park in Times Square. That's why the police was immediately notified and that's why the bomber was interrupted.

or not allowing him to buy the bomb materials. That would be prevention.
there you go. because of 9/11 - it is extremely difficult to buy explosive materials and to construct it without getting red-flagged.

But you must admit, they did "indirectly" prevent the bomb from detonating.

Did you read the first post in this thread?

Heroic cops stopped a car bomb from blowing up in the heart of Times Square Saturday night, officials told the Daily News.

Two female cops patrolling the area noticed a man fumbling with something in the back of a Nissan SUV parked on the southwest corner of 45th St. and Broadway about 7 p.m. The man saw the officers looking and took off running.

That is how they indirectly prevented the bomb from detonating.

you know what's funny?

at first - he was like....
The first real car bomb in Times Square, but it didn't go off thanks to attentative cops.

and now - he was like....
You're right. A couple of NYC cops unwittingly stumbled onto this and scared the terrorist away, just moments away from detonation.

Nothing preventative. Just dumb, pure luck that they came across that man and car.

interesting choice of wording and a change in tune, eh?

I found an error in koko's post
That leaves on average one cop for every 500 square feet.

in NYC - there are always 2 NYPD officers together. never alone.

I'm sorry but the bomber was NOT interrupted. He was long gone before the police showed up.

Yet no one stopped this guy.
