It's a sad story for me to read, mostly because she was alone and refused to let family in- although there are many reasons why someone might isolate themselves, depression being mentioned. I hope the little dog finds some nice new owners (not that the lady wasn't nice).

Of course, psychologists and those working in the mental health profession are not exempt from mental health issues. No one is exempt. Knowing about mental illness does not equal exemption. It may be easier for them to recognise, although from my knowledge most mental illness involves a certain element of denial, and I don't think self-diagnosing is recommended (I don't know this, I'm just guessing the last part).

oh I think she does recognize her problems... I think she is ashame of it which is why she won't let family in.

Hoarding.... fascinating stuff I've read from your posts. I didn't know it is still a mystery to great minds. I used to be a hoarder. I hoarded magazines, old stuff, etc. because I don't like to throw away stuff if it's not broken or unusable. My mom hates the cluttering and throws away everything.

It pissed me off to no end cuz she wants to throw away my junks and she did throw out some. Later on after moving for several times.... I finally got over this hoarding phase. I'm a minimalist. I do keep some old stuff but only if I have a space for it. If not.... chuck'em or sell'em. It's quite liberating. :cool2:

Yes, it is quite liberating, Jiro. We can easily become weighed down by our possessions, which translates to being weighed down by our past and unable to move forward.

You are correct. Self diagnosis, and more importantly, treatment, is never recommended. There is no objectivity there.

I'm afraid even psychologists aren't immune to mental illness and the resulting problems. They are human, after all.

I agree...I watched a TV show about hoarders and two of them were in highly respected field of work.

They don't even have to be experts in that subject but certainly they should be already quite familiar with the condition of extreme compulsiveness. After all, they are in that realm of field of study. I guess that woman knew she was living a lie as a psychologist and tried to keep it secret at home. Only to die in her own mess and filth. Sad...and disgusting at the same time.

living a lie? How would you know? Did you personally talk with this woman?

Hoarding isnt a new problem, this has existed ever since man has started collecting stuff. What's new is the psychological approach to it rather than just the physical approach to it. What we are finding out is that hoarders come from all walks of life, not just poor folks. We also learn that hoarders tend to have underlying undiagnosed mental health problems, and physical health problems that may have been exacerbated by the hoarding.

If nobody knew and she kept it as a secret.....

Rule of thumb: don't do any finger-pointing, or it will come back to bite you in the ass when you slip up.

And that's a humble, humble lesson I learned 6 or 7 months ago. Big-time.

Mental illness is not something anyone who doesnt have it make any speculations. Unless we have it, we really do not know what it is like and cant expect any rational reason to their behaviors.

And koko strikes me as mentally ill though I'll not say anything further.

If we're not supposed to speculate of the mental state of people we don't know except from what we read on the internet, then we shouldn't speculate on the mental state of AD members either.

What I mean is that someone is saying because one is in a certain field that person should understand his/her own mental illness. If we are making speculations on why people with mental illness do the things they do without having the experience of living through it, I think that's unfair.
