NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (AP) -- Seven cadavers donated to Tulane University's medical school were sold to the Army and blown up in land mine experiments, officials said Wednesday. Tulane said it has suspended dealings with a national distributor of donated bodies.

Michael Meyer, a philosophy professor at Santa Clara University in California who has written about the ethics of donated bodies, said the military's use is questionable because it knows donors did not expect to end up in land mine tests.

"Imagine if your mother had said all her life that she wanted her body to be used for science, and then her body was used to test land mines. I think that is disturbing, and I think there are some moral problems with deception here," Meyers said.

That's unreal! I understand the Army's purposes but still...using cadvears for such tactics is tasteless! Those people who donated their bodies to the name of science for medical purposes...to find cures and so forth...but not to be blown to pieces. :roll:

I can see why people feel it's "tasteless" and "borderline immoral" but the bottom line is, these bodies ARE being used for scientific and medical purposes.

It's not like after you're dead, you'll have the distinction to be the body that discovered the cure for AIDS or was launched into deep space. Ever since "donating up your body for science" became commonplace, the uses have run from the mundane (training for medical doctors) to the interesting (let's see how this body reacts to various bombardments of radiation).

Why would one be concerned that after death, their body was used for military applications? Why not simply be happy it wasn't used for vulgar and obscene things like necrophilia? Or, after death, why even bother to care about what your body is used for?

Well, I care what my body is used for.. My body isnt for scientific and medical purposes... I am only providing my Body for the People that need it to save Lives Like Organ Donor. Not for some Military Crap...Why don't u sign up for it Dennis if u think it is not a big deal to you... :D

Testing the dead bodies on landmine is not a medical purpose. Many people donated thier bodies thinking they'll be used for scientific and medical purposes, not to be blown up.

I would be concerned because bodies are to be treated with respect, in medical schools, students are told to show respect for the dead bodies. I believe this is a very serious moral issue since most people don't expect to be blown up by the army after they dies.

I know many people did not expect to be blown up when they donated their bodies to science. They probably would be disgusted and decide to get cremated or buried instead.

I guess that means that if you ever do want your body donated from now on, you'll have to sign a contract that outlines EXACTLY what your body can or can't be used for.

I intend to leave that decision up to my inheritors -- after I'm dead, I certainly have no use for my body! I am an listed as organ donor and if after all my organs are harvested, I don't know if my body would be useable in many scientific purposes.

What if those bodies that were used for land mine tests were basically unusable for other applications? I.e., missing or decomposed internal organs, missing limbs, wrong blood type, etc.
 
What's wrong with blowing up donated watermelons? Anyone in their right minds would never use real bodies for those landmine testings!
 
In a way, I wouldn't mind having my dead body tested by the military like that. My friends can now tell people that I was also in the army as well. :thumb:
 
Interesting... I didn´t know that the donor body was tested by military army.... because I work there... Nobody told me about this..
