A question...is the Cochlear implant made for the hearing or for the deaf?

let's just say.... our jobs pay much more.....

Agreed, Jiro....I am done here.

Oh, and pardon me, would you happen to have any Grey Poupon?

And as to that, it may eventually create an elite deaf class of those who can benefit from CI, with a permanent underclass consisting of those of us who are unsuitable for CI implantation.

I don't have a CI.

but that's not the view or attitude I hold. I only have a problem with people having unrealistic expectation and audist view. I do not believe having a CI/HA would makes you better than those without CI/HA.

On the other hand, why didn't that happen with hearing aids?
Also, the percentage of people who are super CI users (ie very little to no accomondations, including things like CC, FM etc ) is very low
Not to mention that hearing is only part of life sucess.
There's a lot more to life then hearing.............

RIGHT ON!!!!!!! And the end results do seem really scattered, just as with hearing aids. There are some amazing CI users but then again there are amazing/good HA users..........Heck, they claimed back in the old days (80's and 90's) the same thing about HAs, that they're currently claiming about CIs.

Chill out, man, that statement is not aimed directly at you, but a general statement towards some individuals that think the world revolves around their lives.

You wanted answers, I am giving you answers.

Access.....yes

Do you have a job? If yes, you should know what it is like being a deaf employee in a hearing workplace.

If no, I am not going to elaborate....but I will say this: If you apply for a job, and 100 other people applied for the same job, all have the same exact skills & background, and you require an interpreter at $30 per hour for a job that pays $15 per hour, do you think the employer will put you on top of his list?

If wearing a HA or CI helps reduce the need to have a terp, that is an asset, right?

I have absolutely zero skill in oral language after failed speech therapy for 10 years.

HA and CI are much useless to me, unless I want able to hear, that it.

It don't work for some deaf people, especially fluent in ASL and have zero oral language.

i have a specialist text book right here, written in 2005, which is not that long ago, ... it said..."Research indicates that approximately one-third of implanted children achieve all that an implant offers (hyde, 2004). The develop listening skills and spoken languages that enable effective communication with hearing peers and the hearing world. AQ further one-third gain environmental awareness, phonological awareness (essential for literacy), enhanced listening and speech development, but may not achieve the fluent spoken communication skills of the first group. The remaining one-third receives minimal benefit for a variety of reasons. This last group may require alternative communication support to develop literacy. It is essential the research identifies factors that lead to success prior to implantation in order to that appropriate implantation occurs and parental expectations can be met to develop a functioning language mode as soon as possible".

pretty disgusting don't you think??

Name of book?

i'm not saying but itrs a real book AND you can't get electronic versions of it ANYWHERE

huh? where can they buy a heart?

many rich patients have died waiting to be next on the list.

that is because of the waiting of the match - biologically to be suitable for a transplant....

So.....do you think everyone in America should learn Spanish so they can speak with the Mexicans? If we all learned Spanish for them who would be the ones benefitting? The mexicans...or the Americans?

Apples to oranges.

I am so glad you feel that way because many hearing and some deaf people feel that deaf people with CIs are superior to those who don't have one.

and there are some amazing deafies without HA/CI too...

Wirelessly posted

REASONS:
- jobs do not want deaf and hoh people if they cant hear and speak well.
- ASL or any SL is more pricey than spoken languages because they treat sign languages like so-called special needs and/or back-up plan.
- Those jerks still favored prefect people over imprefect ones. That's reality, whenever you like it or not. Well, which do you want hearing or deaf in your career? That's point.

So, yes, many deaf & hoh people do not work because the hearing do not want them in any career! It's not matter if they finish their colleges or not.

I find that it's stupid that you believe CI will sovle all of the problems by encouraging deaf and hoh people to get it so they can be hired.

Oh, you're really odd. :|
Yes, finally. They didn't seem to get my point. I hope they will get yours this time. "Hey, deaf people, do you want a job? You better get a CI because it's an asset." What a turn off!

let's just say.... our jobs pay much more.....
WTF are you talking about? At USPS, I get the same pay as another postal worker who wears CI. Or maybe more than that worker depending on seniority and position.

The cochlear implant does NOT cure your deafness.

It is only better than hearing aids.

You can hear much more sounds than you ever have before but not 100%.

End of story.

I have the CI since last summer and I'm loving it, whether you like it or not.
