3-year-old dropped off at vacant day care center
‘He was knocking on the door’ after bus driver, monitor left him, mom says

LEXINGTON, Ky. - A 3-year-old boy was supposed to be dropped off at his day care in Rowan County, Ky., on Monday, but wound up at a vacant day care building instead.

The mother of Donovan Blevins says the bus driver brought her son to the right day care for the past two weeks, and she wonders how that routine got fouled up on Monday when the boy was dropped off at a day care that had closed for two weeks.

"He was knocking on the door, a 3-year-old knocking on the door, trying to get into the day care that's been closed for two weeks," said Diana Blevins.

The most troubling part of the incident is that a speech and a hearing problem makes Donovan especially vulnerable.

"He can barely say his own name," said Diana Blevins. "We rely on the school system to help take care of our kids, and we put them in their hands and they failed on me, they completely failed me. That bus driver and that monitor did not do their job. They let my son out by his self without no one there to reach for his hand. He's 3 years old."

Another bus driver spotted Donovan and brought him to the right day care.

Donovan's day care director said the incident was a clear violation. "The monitor has to physically hand a preschool child. You have to hold their hand or they won't let them off the bus," said Lacy Collins of Busy Bee Daycare.

The Rowan County Schools superintendent said the driver is suspended until the investigation is complete, and that the bus monitor won't be riding buses anymore. And while Donovan is OK, his mother wants the driver and monitor fired.

"I never want another mother to feel the way I feel, never," said Blevins. "I never want another mother to feel that way."

The school superintendent said the bus driver is very competent and that everyone makes mistakes. He also said the school system has reviewed and updated its policies to make sure such an incident never happens again.

Damn! What's wrong with the driver!?! Can't he read the paper if it is at RIGHT LOCATION?! I don't blame the mother that wanting them be fired. I would be same thing in mother's shoe. At least he is ok whew and now he is at right day care from now on.

That's scary, this kid is only 3 years old and the bus driver is supposed to make sure that this 3 years old enter the building. How can a bus driver leave a child outside alone without a sight of an adult supervisor waiting for him, or letting him in the building? It only takes a matter of seconds for a child to get kidnapped.

I hope this would not ever happened again to any child.

whoa... i would be pissed off it was my own kid.. jeez.. They should have someone at the door to make sure all kids are in after getting off the bus for their safety.. and why was the kid dropped off at wrong daycare?? i dont get this? the driver and the monitor both should be fired! period!

My goodness!!! Glad the child is alright. The bus drivers responsible to wait till the child in the building or wait for an adult to come to the bus to get a child from the bus. My goodness!! I dont blame the mother's feeling abt this.

I think 3 years old is far too young to go on school bus.

Also the day care is responsible to inform the Parents/Guarantors about the Day Care's two weeks close down, otherwise it would never happen in first place.

:eek3:, I'm just glad this 3 years old child is okay, the driver did was wrong...

ain't going let my child who 3 yrs old attend day care by driver school bus..
Forget it..

I'd rather tag along w/my child and goes to straight way to day care that is it..
Rest of 3 children loves attend Day care with me along drop off and pick up only..
4th future child.. no thanks not going to day care.. all I have my precocious baby stay w/me around til 5 or 6 yrs old and have full time school..

Frightening.

The bus driver and monitor were totally wrong to leave a 3-year-old child alone.

As a mom (and grandma) I can't imagine letting my 3-year-old travel alone on a bus. A "monitor" is NOT the same as a family member or close friend.

damn :Ohno: i won't allow my child in day care i will stay home until child is 5 or 6 to go to school
this is idiot of the driver ugh

I'd rather take my kid to the daycare, also. Those people are stupid enough to do that with a 3 year old.

i would agree with posts!

if i have my own children one days and i will drop my kids to school at ages 4-5 years old and dont going to daycares dues serious policy they staff getting pretty serious in troubles for left kids in vans! but i can worry about that but i can watch and i will have words with daycares directors, board of directors and parents have rights for childrens!

I disagree to leave 3 years old by their own on the bus... My both children were 3 years old. I took my 3 years old children to kindergarten and also took them to child-minder myself instead of give them to the bus driver to take care of.

I can understand that it's not bus driver's job task to take care of 3 years but it would be nice when he do something voluntarily.

It's stupid to leave a kid alone with nobody around. Even in high school, my bus driver didn't leave until I had the door open, so I won't get stuck outside in bad weather if anything happen to my key or the door.

I was horrified to read this. As I'm a Day Care Centre Director of a Centre in Australia, I'm very alarmed to hear this happen. Thankfully the child was ok in the end. I don't know what the regulations are in America, but here in Australia, children who are dropped off to Day Care must be signed in on arrival and cannot be left until the child is officially in the building and signed in the Day Care Room so this sort of thing cannot happen.

Doesn't America have this sort of system?

Kangaroo

Yes I am wondering the same.

As far as I know, yes but I dont know if it is mandatory. From my experience with daycares for my daughter, I always have to sign her in each time I drop her off.

My question is if the daycare has been closed for 2 weeks, wouldnt it be obvious by seeing no cars around in the parking lot or wouldnt the windows have a bare look? Just wondering...

That is so scary!

My son used to go to headstart and he rides on the bus. I am always with him for the bus to come and help him to get on and off. Once the bus is at the headstart. The driver shut off the engine and get all the kids into the building. There is also a monitor on the bus too. I was on the bus about 3 times and I have seen how the process work. Not only that the bus driver had to check under the seat and under the bus to see if the child is there or not. Also they have to have a head count too.

It is sad the child was at the wrong day care and I dont understand why would the stupid bus driver still think that is the right building. Duh.

HYAH to the bus driver and monitor.
