Those who decide not to get a CI

Some points I'd like to make.
1. The best way a deaf child can learn speech is by using ASL -
With speech training you need to hear your own voice to get that audio feedback with the help of a CI. I wouldn't say the best way to learn speech is through ASL but through auditory exercises.
2. Even with a CI, you're still deaf. -
Sure. Who says that they are hearing? Turn off the CI, they can't hear a thing. So...?
3. When being implanted with a CI, you actually lose ALL of the residueal hearing you had left. Which means if the CI fails in some fashion, you're chances of using advanced digital hearing aids is doomed.
That was the past, nowadays there are techniques that minimizes the damage from electrode insertion into the cochlea.
- Hearing Preservation with Cochlear Implants | MED-EL

They began studying and implementing these techniques since the middle 2000s.

4. To merely suggest that a deaf person without a CI cannot enjoy life with sounds is insulting and idiotic. I'm profoundly deaf, but I'm a music junkie. I go to concerts, turn up music in my car, and yes, I follow along with the words. Deafness doesn't stop me at doing anything...if anything at all, it made me creative in finding ways to do things in life.
People have their preferences when it comes to listening to music.
..

Deafbajagal is correct when she says that the most effective way for a deaf child to learn spoken language is through the use of ASL. Auditory exercises are just what the name implies. Practice listening. They do nothing to promote the learning of language.

Short array is not appropriate for all implant candidates. There is a very narrow window of criteria that makes one eligible for short array insertion.

Because I wear my hearing aid and it has done very well for me.

Seeing that you don't qualify, you really haven't made a decision re: CI. The industry made it for you. Can't decide not to get what you don't even qualify for.

Yeah HA has done well for others as well. well, they would wisely have waited till they get older and old enough to see that HA has been useful for them before they receive some foreign objects inside them. Thank you for your input. :aw:

I wonder why one must "qualify" in the first place, providing "all's clear", medically?

Benefit to risk ratio. Since it is an invasive procedure and anesthesiology is necessary.

Well, given the supposedly great rate of success (of the CI), I would think that someone like me, for example (no, I'm not even contemplating it, lol) who has a great auditory memory, command of the spoken word/English and all that provided by my hearing aid, would gain even better/more success....like the swish of my dog's tail, people whispering, etc.....?

It would seem so!

And now I can't even tell you why I won't go for it. My age, I guess and the fact that perfect hearing is 50/50 cuz the one half is BS and not worth hearing.

I did see a film 2-3 years ago about an older couple that got CIs..... It worked great for the male but his wife had a very hard time.

I see.....do you have any machinations going this route? Just curious....

Edit: Machination isn't the best word here, lol. Of course, I meant "thoughts"...
