Drinkers live longer than non-drinkers

And doctors prescribed smoking back them.

because we didn't have viagra and male enhancement drugs back then... :smoking:

Only on a surface. You cannot disinfect your body infections with alcohol. You can pour alcohol safely on skin or your mouth to kill germs but when you consume it inside thinking it will kill germs inside the body, it won't. It'd be way too diluted and if reached to a concentration to kill bacteria, it will kill you.

I don't know if you experience that but if you gargle Listerine for 1 minute (not 30 seconds) and spit it out, you may find that there's a lot of white film coming out of your mouth after a few minutes. It's the killed healthy cells. That is linked to higher risk of oral cancers... which is not surprising.

Drinkers live longer and it has nothing to do with the antibiotic effect but rather that alcohol performs a lot of functions such as inhibiting blood clots and increasing fibrolysis. But of course, drinking wine or cocktails may reduce food poisoning (altho it's not conclusive yet) and that's basically based on a hypothesis that it kills bacteria on surface.

oh you're arguing about antibiotic effect and improved blood circulation.. never mind. ignore me.

They also were prescribed for asthma at one time.

back then.... we didn't have asthma inhaler.. I mean - you know how when you take first puff and then you cough madly? that should clear your lung up!

I do of my asthma inhaler. It does have that effect also!

Famous Words
I don't have a drinking problem
I drink
I get drunk
I pass out
No Problem!!!

My posting does not suggest a diet fad. It requires MODERATION so it cannot be extreme.

Heavy drinking is dangerous. And I mean DANGEROUS.

I completely agree with you. As an adult child of a (still active) alcoholic, I also have seen first hand the emotional pain heavy drinking causes someone (and others).

I really doubt this study's validity. I just don't see how a extremely heavy drinker can live longer than a non drinker given the potential damage of the liver and other organs.

Sorry, but I am extremely skeptical of this study.

That "news" doesn't prove much. It also does not discuss confounding factors. And frankly, nothing will beat a long and healthy life that eating well and exercizing will offer. So, what? Drinking might help you live to 60? What about what all that daily alcohol is doing to the brain and nervous system? Moderate consumption isn't going to kill ya, but in the end, you're better off without it.

Drink a glass of wine daily is good for you that is what I heard many time. But with more than two glasses of wine daily is no no. I don't drink, I probably will die younger from what I read here. But I should have been dead long time ago anyway. This study is pointless.

I knew couple who were alocholics died shortly after they stop drinking, if they don't stop drinking they probably will live little longer.

So am I. Just visit any alcohol treatment center to gain another perspective.

Sigh, for the upteenth time, this study, as with all other studies, do NOT apply to alcoholics! They all focused on moderate drinking and consistently find that it provides the maximum benefit for 40 years or older people.

Every year, thousands die from aspirin side effects but much more are saved by aspirin.

I read that about several thousands die from antibiotic side effects a year but without antibiotics, we'd have millions die from lack of antibiotics!

You are not getting the proper perspective at all. All studies will say that the more you drink after 2-3 a day, the worse your health will get. They all follow the J-shaped mortality risk.

As for alcoholism, my two cousins died from alcoholic complications so I know what it can do to a person but they were alcoholic. They drink from morning to evening. The studies talked about MODERATE drinking which averages 2 a day. Not 12 a day!

There are HUNDREDS of studies confirming over and over - moderate drinking provides better health than heavy drinking or abstinence.

Oh, okay. I supposed I am a bit biased, sorry about that. I shouldn't make any responses to this thread since I no longer drink, anyway.

The problem is, no knows whether or not their "moderate" drinking will become addictive to them until it's too late. The addiction can creep up on them.

Antibiotics are given under prescription by a doctor; not so alcoholic beverages. The doctors can limit the doses and frequencies; who's limiting the intake of alcohol for the individual?

If one has the "alcoholic gene," all it takes is one drink to start having problems.

That's right. Someone who is prone to addiction can become hooked long before crossing the "moderation" line.
