Drinkers live longer than non-drinkers

My dad had some friends that were doctors that he hanged out with so some people would think dad was a Dr. too. An little old lady said to Dr. Dad that she had trouble sleeping at night. Dad told her to take a tablespoon of Brady before she when bed at night. The next time the woman ran into my dad , she said she been doing as he said and been sleeping better! I do not know if that lady lived longer but she slept better.

The Patriots probably won the Super Bowl that year, too!

That's right...that's why I love to drink wine regularly as possible. Better than toking a joint! Wines are affordable like 5 to 7 dollars cheap good wine bottle from the liquor store. My parents are still active in their 70s because they drink a glass of wine everyday to help their blood in good circulation. Wine also does help a good laughing all night along. A lot of people says my mother looks younger than she's at the age. She's so lucky that she doesn't have "spider" veins visible on her legs.

My father was a heavy drinker after the Korean War/Conflict. Mother had 2-3 drinks a week if that. Father died at age 60 of a massive heart attack. Mother is still going at 70 and has medical issues, but the little bit of drinking was not the cause.

I am healthier now that I quit drinking.

Thank goodness my bf quit alcoholism on January 1, 2005. His mother was a heavy alcoholic since after my bf was born (at the age of 18.) She died 2 years ago of liver cirrhosis. She was only 50 years old. His grandmother (his mom's mother) died of the same disease at the age of 49.

Couldn't imagine seeing her drinking 24-beers pack each day for more than 30 years. Needless to say, two of my bf's siblings had been born with defects.

Alcohol is, of course, contraindicated for alcoholics.

Like I said moderate drinking provides the best benefit but less or more, it'll not bring more benefits and it follows the J slope meaning that if you don't drink at all, you're more likely to die sooner than if you drink 2 glasses a day but after that, the risk of premature death rises exponentially.

Heavy drinking is way much worse than no drinking. If you have only two choices, it would be no drinking at all. But if you don't have drinking problem, the best choice would be one to two a day. And those who stick with just 1 to 2 drinks benefit the most, healthwise.

Here a new article explaining why drinkers live longer than non-drinkers:

"One of the most contentious issues in the vast literature about alcohol consumption has been the consistent finding that those who don't drink tend to die sooner than those who do. The standard Alcoholics Anonymous explanation for this finding is that many of those who show up as abstainers in such research are actually former hard-core drunks who had already incurred health problems associated with drinking.

But a new paper in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research suggests that — for reasons that aren't entirely clear — abstaining from alcohol does tend to increase one's risk of dying, even when you exclude former drinkers. The most shocking part? Abstainers' mortality rates are higher than those of heavy drinkers.

"But even after controlling for nearly all imaginable variables — socioeconomic status, level of physical activity, number of close friends, quality of social support and so on — the researchers (a six-member team led by psychologist Charles Holahan of the University of Texas at Austin) found that over a 20-year period, mortality rates were highest for those who had never been drinkers, second highest for heavy drinkers and lowest for moderate drinkers."

Heavy Drinkers Outlive Nondrinkers, Study Finds - TIME

its funny when i read comments on TIME touting benefits of *moderate drinking*, they keep talking about alcoholism. It clearly shows that they're incapable of comprehending the point and they keep talking about their alcoholic beloved ones dying so young.

Moderate drinkers are NOT alcoholics! There's a huge difference between coming home and having a glass of wine with dinner than coming home and drinking til you pass out.

I am agreed with you. We are very rare to drink a alcoholics. Sometime, we drink for birthday, party, holiday, etc probably once a month or few a month.

Netrox.. I don't know if you've done any reading on molecular biology.. but you do know that alcohol acts as an antiseptic right..? It shouldn't be something like an amazing discovery. Alcohol works great, especially gram positive peptidoglycan and their proteins. Those coccus strains are suckers for taking 'em in.
I generally seep dirty or long unused utensils in something like Vodka or Soju for several hours prior to use just for basic sterilization techniques. Won't degrade the silverware yet kills the bacteria. Peace of mind.

Here's a publication to back up my claim and it is on E. coli no less, one if not the most common bacteria in all humans. It's pretty old info for those who already knew about it, but if you didn't then good to learn something new.

Mechanism of lysis of Escherichia coli by ethanol and other chaotropic agents.

Ingram LO.

Abstract

Ethanol has been shown to inhibit the assembly of cross-linked peptidoglycan and to induce cell lysis in Escherichia coli. These effects of ethanol appear to result from the weakening of hydrophobic interactions by ethanol rather than from the intercalation of ethanol into membranes. Other chaotropic agents also inhibited cross-linking and induced lysis. The potency of chaotropic anions with regard to this effect followed the expected chaotropic series. Antichaotropic agents, which strengthened hydrophobic interactions, antagonized ethanol-induced lysis. The weakening of hydrophobic interactions by ethanol is proposed as a general mechanism by which ethanol and other chaotropic agents could affect membrane-associated enzyme activities.
