FOXNews.com - Billboard Claiming Martin Luther King Was Republican Angers Black Activists in Houston
"Martin Luther King may have very well believed in some of the Christian principles of the Republican Party, but Dr. Martin Luther King was not a Republican or a Democrat," said Quanell X, who heads the New Black Panther Party in Houston.

"Dr. King was bigger than a political party -- he was a humanitarian, and so to attach him exclusively to any party is to devalue his humanitarian global status," he said. "We were insulted ... by the billboard because it was a blatant lie."

King held great sway over black voters and carefully courted both Republicans and Democrats. He never officially endorsed a party or candidate.

I don't know if King was a republican. I've never heard it before, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised. Back then, republicans and democrats were much different parties than they are now.

The article is absolutely correct, though, in saying that the democrats were the party of segregation and the KKK (David Duke or Robert Byrd anyone?). Southerners refused to vote republican for over a century after the civil war because it was the party of Lincoln, even if it was more politically aligned with their values.

Those silly Southerners. Shucks.... :)

Yet, the irony is that Democrats touted MLK as one of their own for years.
Kind of funny to hear it from a Black Panther Party person of all thing. Guess people forget quickly about the voter intimidation tactic they tried to do last year to make sure people would "vote" for Obama at a polling station

Never again, I cannot believe that you are talking like BS. :bsflag:

It's unfortunately true. Though he's putting just a nice touch of spin on the ball.

It was an isolated incident, and nobody was harassed or prevented from voting. Their presence was still intimidating though.

and voter intimidation by Republican side.... I think we both know it's silly to continue this farce since both parties are no saint.

I saw the video. The two panthers were basically just "standing guard" outside the pulling place wielding batons and dressed in combat fatigues and boots. But they weren't going up to people and forcing them to vote a certain way.

Granted, their presence itself was intimidating, but the person who was filming them and confronting them was also very antagonistic and, to put it bluntly, a whining jackass who exacerbated the situation. He was obviously trying to incite them into doing something rash and wanted to catch it on video for political motives.

I agree, however, that they never should have been allowed to be there in the first place. The cameraman, instead of being a Geraldo Rivera wannabe, should have just called the cops if he really felt threatened. And charges definitely should not have been dropped.

Like you said, carrying a baton, wearing combat boots, jackets emblazoned with the Black Pather emblem and such were enough to question their intent for being like that. I'd question it, too, and it does fall within the realm of voters intimidation. It's quite clear that a baton is a weapon they held in their hands. Suppose it was the KKK that did that?

Nice try, Jiro. Not at an Obama rally but at a health care reform rally in Arizona where it is legal to carry guns in public.

so did anything happen? any violence? any assault?

Suppose it was the KKK that did that?

Suppose? what do you mean suppose? KKK did far worse. by lynching. cross burning. vandalizing. assaulting.

as far as I'm concerned - it is legal for them to wear combat clothes and batons as well. let's see..... baton..... vs. semi-automatic assault rifle + handgun....

:hmm:

To be honest, I am so cynical about politcs right now I half question whether the black panthers were actually Republicans trying to make Dems look bad and The republicans at the health care rally were Dems trying to make the GOP look bad...........I mean really, things have gotten so far out of whack would anyone be surprised if this came out??????

Not asking if you believe it (I don't) but would you be surprised????

I agree with your point. The only difference is only one took place at a polling station.

Not at all.

They're all crooks. Each and every last one of them.

 No I wouldn't be surprised if that happened. After all - this old tactic is not unheard of. It's commonly used by undercover as instigator in rally protests like WTO.

I do declare. I feel a bit consternashun that nobudy gav mu suth'n post the least of a chuckle
