With the economy as it is, and myself being laid off, I have been toying with the idea of going to school to be a Registered Nurse.

I have always wanted to be in the medical field, however I get a lot of people saying I can't.

Prove to me I can't.

Because I believe I can.

What do you think?

Why are people saying you can't?

i think they are the one who are insecure. if you are very interested into it then you can do it.

People have being telling me I can't my whole life, long before I became hard of hearing. Don't listen to them. Follow your heart.

Don't listen to those who try to put you down. You know more about yourself than other people. Prove 'em wrong... Go for it! Live your dreams. :)

Don't let those people live your life, just follow your heart and live your dreams, if that's what you want to be.. a nurse. Good luck, I'm rooting for you. ;)

You are not alone. I have gone throug the same thing that everyone say that I can not do the field or career because of my deafness. They surely know how to put me down, even my parents did that too. I don't like someone tell me not to do this or that. I can take care of myself in the field. You just have to try your best in your education and job training to be able to prove that you can do the job. Being as a registered nurse, you have to listen to the patient who might talk in low voices or listen to the heart beat in the stethscope. I don't know but you have the gut to find a way to hear sounds. Good luck. :thumb:

May people have said i cannot do my job, 10 years later i am still at this job!!!, If you put your heart to it You can do it...

I am from UK, I know someone who's RN nurse and being few years older (i am 31) she had retired to teaching uni to teach nurses... and she's severely/profoundly deaf.

There is someone on AD who is a nurse... DougRN i think.

I actually know a 21/22 year old profoundly deaf nurse. She just graduated in Feb and is working as a nurse!! :)

You can do anything you put your mind to. For example, my softball coach had an accident and became paralyzed from the neck down. He had to make many changes in his life, but he didn't want softball to be removed from it. He has been a very successful coach since the accident and I thouroughly enjoy helping him now (I am 17 and assistant coaching his 12 and under travel softball team). We won two of the three tournaments this year, and were runner-up in the other. This is a big feat because only one of the twelve girls had ever played travel softball before. All it takes is hard work and dedication from the girls and the coaches. Go for it, and if I am ever stuck in a hospital, I hope you can be there saving my life.

Why do I need to prove to you that you can't do it? You have a lot of people around you that are telling you that you can't do it. Well, what do you believe you can do? Everything is electronic today and you wouldn't have to take blood pressure using the stethoscope or anything else that requires hearing. Times have changed.

In addition, no one has mentioned this so I will. What kind of friends do you have that tell you what you can't do? You don't need naysayers in your life -- replace them. If they're family, there's not much you can do about that, but you can choose not to attend family get-togethers, like shel. Just because they're family doesn't mean you have to associate with them and be buddy-buddy with them.

Now, the question remains: Can you do it? I don't know. Can you do it? Do you believe you can do it? Do you believe that you WILL do it and be able to do it? Those are the questions that you should be asking. I don't know you; you don't know me. However, your dream is to be a nurse, right? So, why are you listening to "know it all nothings" when it's your life, your choice, your future?

There is a saying: If's it's gonna be, it's up to me! The ball is in your court now and classes are starting pretty quick. You better sign out and go register or apply if you haven't done so already.

You go, girl! You can do it!!

By the way, welcome to alldeaf!! :)

The old saying.....where there's a will, there's a way....still rings true!.....Some people can be so negative! Don't listen to them....I'm proud of my own achievements, after being told "you can't do that"!....or "how did you do that??!"...."How do you know? you can't hear!"....

Some people don't want to believe a deafie can do things they cannot....We can do anything, except hear.

Good luck!

I guess it must be because of your deafness. I wasnt sure if you were deaf or not.

I agree with everyone...tell those people to &^^%$ off. Go for it! You got our support!

She may have to look for a school that accepts her. Some require students to be hearing.

Yes yes yes indeed! You may become perfectly educated and trained and practice as a successful nurse. It is definately possible and if you have any questions about it I am an open book. There are many adaptable equipment to assist in being just as capable and successful as a well practiced hearing nurse.

When you consider that the average RN in Iowa makes $24 per hour, and Iowa is the lowest paying state for RNs, why would your friends try to discourage you? Demand is high, wages are good. You get to help people. Seems like a good plan for you. You could move to any other state for an instant wage increase!
