Former First Cat Socks, one of the world’s most famous felines, died Friday at the age of 20 after battling throat cancer since November. A stray cat rescued by the Clinton's daughter, Chelsea, Socks lived in the governor’s mansion in Arkansas and later moved with the family to the White House.

"Socks brought much happiness to Chelsea and us over the years, and enjoyment to kids and cat lovers everywhere," the Clintons said in a statement, released first to PEOPLE.COM. "We're grateful for those memories, and we especially want to thank our good friend, Betty Currie, for taking such loving care of Socks for so many years."

Currie, the president's personal secretary, and her husband, Bob, took over care of Socks after the Clintons left the White House. It was near their home in Maryland that Socks was put to sleep Friday morning. "He could no longer stand and wasn’t eating," according to family friend and presidential historian Barry Landau. ...

Whoaaaaaaaaaaaaa where have I been?? I didnt know that they have a cat there. Dang and yes it is sad to see something like this happened. But I am sure Socks is happy at the Rainbow Bridge and play with other cats.

I remember the Clintons Having Socks in the White House.

Awww, thats sad but he did live a long live for a cat!
And since he suffered with throat cancer, it was just
as well, that he was put to sleep.
My son had a cat that looked just like him and his
name was Oreo, haha. He passed away back in
early 1990's. We miss him.

he live full life with the Clintons for so long as a cat 20 years is long for a cat like him.

he lived with Clinton's former secretary though after Clinton left White House.
 
It´s sad :( after look beautiful and adorable pictures of him... Send my sympathy to Clintons family for the loss of their beloved Socks. :(


Socks remind of Tarzan, cat I had when I was little girl... I miss him... :(


 
Sorry to hear about your cat's loss, Chelsea and her family. :( Her cat reminds me of my friend's cat. She had a black/white cat just like Chelsea's cat, Sock. FiFi, her cat was not able to eat the last 4 days and she recently took her cat to the vet to find out what went wrong with her cat. When the vet examined and told her that her cat's teeth got infected that can't be treated because her cat's too wild, which found in the woods by her brother.. and it's best to put the cat to sleep. My friend cried and agreed what the vet said. FiFi was only 9 years old. She was a good cat. Today, I will stop by at the Hallmark store to buy a (pet) sympathy card and send it to her.
