please explain to me about cochlear implants

We were told a similar thing about our daughter when we looked into getting her CI. We were told that during the surgery, *something* (can't remember what anymore... it's been a while) would need to be cut/destroyed and that would take away any natural hearing she might have in that ear. We were...

    Hi!

Problems in utero, so she was born deaf. She wasn't identified until she was almost 2, though. Can't imagine her any other way now. :D

    Hearing wife to hoh husband

I know what you mean. It drives me batty, too. The way I look at it is that just because it was/is "normal" to teach a hearing parent there's not value in it, that doesn't make it right. That's what I mean by dysfunction. Regardless of what one calls it, you and I agree - it's a shame.

    Hi

Wow! Both in the same day. That takes some... guts! I give you credit. I would have been terrified and I don't know if I could have gotten two at the same time, especially not knowing if they would work or not. Glad to hear that it's worked out so well for you!

    WVSDB- Using SEE?

 WOW! I had no idea so much had happened in this thread since I posted. Didn't mean to incite a riot! RELAX!!! I don't believe my original post referred to SEE as a language at all. I know quite a few deaf people who grew up learning SEE in school. Their written and spoken English...

    Hi

I'm interested to hear how the bilateral implants are working out for you. How long have you had a hearing loss? My daughter's audi told us a second implant wouldn't benefit her. It would give her increased access to sound but wouldn't improve clarity. I know someone who has bilateral implants...

    Hi!

Hi to both of you! Welcome to the forum. I'm relatively new here. My 10-yr-old daughter has a hearing loss and wears a CI in one ear and an HA in the other. I'll see you around the boards, I'm sure.

    Hearing wife to hoh husband

Christi - ((hugs)) Sorry for what you and your hubby are going through. Others have touched on it, though not very gently (eek!), that there is/was definitely dysfunction in your husband's family with regard to his hearing loss. I don't feel like it's that his family didn't accept it. It seems...

    Hi, everyone

Hey! Welcome to the group. I love your username. I used to be a huge Phillies fan back in the Len Dykstra days. Funny thing - my deaf daughter didn't realize she reads lips. We mentioned something to her once about how many deaf people read lips and she asked, "Do I?" Uh.... YES!!! I didn't...

The insurance won't cover CI for 5 years son

My daughter has auditory neuropathy. She's deaf. Some days she can hear better than others, but there's still a loss there. The CI helps her out - she says she likes it better than her hearing aid, but it certainly isn't a perfect fix.

    WVSDB- Using SEE?

My humble opinion would be that the goal of teaching SEE would be so that a child can effectively communicate with others using ENGLISH. With SEE, written and spoken English could be grammatically correct, but it would have no bearing on how well the child can effectively use ASL.

    So many questions- Please help!

I wonder if misssamelia will come back??? In my opinion, one of the most important things to remember is that you can always change your mind. If you try out a mainstream school and find it isn't working (or stops working after a period of time), you can try out a bilingual/bicultural school...

    I will post this again

Cochlear implants aren't for everyone, but I have a friend whose entire family (including him) has progressive hearing loss. He started to lose his hearing around age 20. He certainly could have lived his life with ASL since most of his family is deaf and so is his wife. He chose to get an...

    Introducing....Angie :)

AngieDust - Welcome to the forum and welcome to the club of feeling intimidated and afraid to be lost in a deaf conversation. :giggle: I once had a woman stop me in the bathroom at Gallaudet. She was upset about someone who had recently died, but I couldn't figure out HOW she knew this...
