    F**k you, Deaf "Community"

I was kind of sad at first when I read it then I though like LOL because the person makes deafness sound like such a freakishly terrible thing. Little world of shame and exclusion? Not even close! Since when were cochlear implants cosmetic? I don't really see what's so bad about cosmetic...

    deafness and sadness

I'm sorry that you're sad, but talking to the people on AD will help, and that's a guarantee. :( I've been like this since birth, but it continued to worsen. I used to be so frustrated too, feeling that I'll never get the equivalent goodness of what everyone else is getting. Then I learned of...

Is being deaf a disability or not?

I don't like to see it as a "disability' because it makes it seem like I'm not equal to the 'average' person. It's obvious that I don't get the experience sound like a hearing person, but i've learned to dismiss worrying about that. I certainly don't mind though, receiving compensation for this...

How many people here are NOT deaf?

I didn't know there were so many hearing here! Nice to meet everyone. I'm not hearing but I'm glad I learned how to talk!

    You Are NOT Stupid :)

Wow, I feel like a genius now. Made my day.

How do deaf people learn to read?

Well, now that I think about it, I can't really remember. I remember going to see a speech therapist at school. I could speak, not really well(and still can't speak very well). I just remember a lot of word and phonics cards and pictures cards. I also remember learning to lip read. The speech...

    What's your dream musical instrument?

I kind of play anything. I like classical, but I also play pop and others. Jazz is fun to play too, because you can really "feel" it. I started playing when I was younger(around second grade, I think), but then as my hearing got worse(although I was born deaf, it wasn't too bad back then) I...

    What's your dream musical instrument?

Yes. I usually go over to a cousin of mine's house to play his upright, but at home, I have a keyboard.

Why do parents insist on ear piercings on babies and toddlers?

I actually remember getting my ears pierced. I remember I was young(four or five or something I think), but not too young that I couldn't remember. The anticipation was far worse than the actual piercing, and being a bit used to physical pain at that time, it was rather small potatoes. I had to...

    Etiquette

Well I guess if you don't want to directly ask if she is deaf, maybe you could ask if she knows sign language? Or you could try to strike up a conversation and if she talk to you, you could sign back. The best way would be like Lighthouse77 said, though, I think.

    What's your dream musical instrument?

I just call myself deaf, but I guess you can say I'm more hoh because I can hear pretty well with my ha on, but if it's off, I can't hear myself play at all. I'm not sure if I'd be able to hear the difference between a Stradivarius violin and my regular one, but it would sure be nice to have one!

'Hollywood' sign gone in three weeks...

Oh please save that sign. I've lived in Southern California all my LIFE and have not been able to see it in person yet. I love these kind of landmarks and I'd donate to save it but the most I'd be able to give is about $25-$50. I'm hoping some wealthy Hollywood lover or actor or producer or...

    What's your dream musical instrument?

Well if I could ever find someone that sells one and have the money for one(not gonna happen unless I win the lottery or something), I'd like a Stradivarius violin. For a piano, I'd want something like what you have there... but I'd want it in black, white, or a crimson shade.

What Ticks You Off (Most) About Hearies?

Oh goodness, I would be feel so frustrated and disgusted if I heard that. It's like putting us in a whole other category for judging looks. It's already enough that the way we hear and communicate are usually looked down upon, but to have a lower category and expectation for appearance is just...

    Identity

That wasn't a stupid question! It made me think(which doesn't happen very often, LOL). Well, I'd say I feel like I'm equally both. People will usually recognize my race first and then my deafness. I'm a deaf American :) I have both national and deaf pride. Like the above poster said, it kind of...

What is it like to be deaf -poem

That was an amazing poem. It described a lot of how I feel at times when strangers make quick judgements about me.

Um, A Problem with a Cartoon

Well, I was a bit indifferent to that. I didn't offend me, but I would see why some people would be. It just made me touch my ha and sort of chuckle. I don't think it's a comic for everyone, but I guess some people would find it humorous.

    Paying money for sleepovers?

I had never went to a friend's to sleepover, only at my cousins'. And they used to come over and sleep too. Never do we ask each other to fork over some reimbursement. I would think it's a bit strange because if you were "invited", then you expect to have everything covered except special things...

    Are you afraid of needles

I've gotten a lot better but I am still scared inside. I have never actually looked at one going into me until that last blood test I had, when I got suddenly very, very curious and peeked at it and saw my blood filling up and I felt sick and like I was going to faint. Although I don't think I...

    Dissertation help

I try to sign if they will understand, and sometime write things down. And of course, I try to speak when I think I will be understood.
