    Reclaiming the term "hearing impaired"

I personally disagree. as a Deaf and disabled person, our hearing is only "impaired" due to the failure of society to accommodate us.

    Name Signs

Varies so much based on area. But generally I have never changed sign names that someone has. So I'd say use your current one and if you get a new name sign you can adjust to the situation/circumstance or change your existing name sign,

Allies / Minority groups - Relative importance of issues

One problem I have observed with some allies and/or some minority groups: they fail to see the Big Picture of their existence and how their existence contributes. They go around setting up ONE issue as the most serious issue for the minority group when in fact it is only one of many issues that...

    being a hearie??

    1. Same here. 2. I agree - those learning ASL should educate themselves.

    being a hearie??

Well, that example is a case of a majority culture not inviting minority cultures in - but I was discussing minority cultures not inviting majority cultures in as a part of their lives when I was making my post. In that case (minority not accepting majority), I don't necessarily think that is...

    being a hearie??

Also, I wanted to add (for the OP) a few things. Getting past the attitude and the requirement to be fluent in ASL, I just wanted to warn you that many (not all) Deaf people (the physically deaf ones who are Deaf, to be more specific) don't (understandably) want to accept hearing people as...

Haha - I tend to say things very succinctly.

    being a hearie??

You can still be hearing and culturally Deaf. However, your attitude and your willingness to learn ASL - the language of culturally Deaf people - will impact your acceptance in the Deaf community. I think it is great that you are learning ASL - please just have fun along the way and support us...

    volunteer firefighter learning ASL

You should not target some of your ASL learning for that purpose. From my perspective, it puts you in the position of being merely a "helper" and not an equal. I don't think, therefore, that it would be totally helpful to be able to sign certain phrases only for that reason. I don't feel I can...

    Deaf culture as a group

    1. You are wrong here. If a hearing person knows ASL and Deaf culture, they are culturally Deaf. 2. This is why you are continuing to be ignorant - because you know no one that uses ASL. 3. Your ignorance can be seen by others to be right because you appear as an know-it-all.

    Deaf culture as a group

You are physically deaf, not culturally Deaf. You don't identify with Deaf culture. You are projecting your own hearing mindness on these posts about a culture that you don't even identify with. It would be in your best interest to not discuss things that you don't have the knowledge to...

    Deaf Awareness

Its not about physical considerations that was referred to. It is about making the decision to follow the norms/values/etc of that culture and connecting with these people in that culture. Not necessarily only connected to if you are the label of that culture.
