A friend of my mom's had worked a long time at a loan office and she got me a job there as an office assistant. I was about 18.

I don't know if this is something you'd be interested in doing, but http://www.spoonflower.com lets you create custom fabric. I've seen artists on Flickr that have had some of their drawings turned into nice pieces of fabric or swatches. So that might be a possibility.
