ssi and marriage?

I just got married recently and was getting ssi.. it's cut off but I get to keep the ssdi for a while (it won't last long) I'm also working and my husband makes too much money.

trust me.. if you work .. you'll feel better working than collecting ssi and ssd..

If I could work I would! Isn't that the point of disability though? It gives those who can't work because of a disability a way to survive? Oh, and I don't get ssdi I get ssi/ssa. I need this stuff for the medicare mostly. Without that insurance i'll probably die, literally.

I dont blame u...I got SSDI when my ex hubby left me. It saved my ass.

Why not go to your local SSA office and find out?

If you can't work and you need a second income to make it through, which most people do when they live together, married or not, You won't lose your SSI.

I think this touches on a much deeper issue, how our goverment screws over people born here and those who are disabled. If only I were a mexican migrant or asian immigrant. How nice it would be to have a interest free loan, grants and subsidies, a home I own, etc.

"If only I were a mexican migrant or asian immigrant."

Err well that wouldn’t help, you would still be looking for a hand out and still not have a job and still have no money. You would then be complaining how badly we mexicans and asians are treated in this country.

Since you say you cant work would you then want the government to pay for your interest free loan? You talk like you could work and if you had the benifits that working people had you would be better off.Why exactly cant you work.

This is a difficult issue about Mexican people coming to America. The big problem is that there are many young Mexican gangs came to my country and spread to some states. They abused American teenagers with their type of games. Many police have a hard time to deal with them. Most of them are on welfare. Do we need to stop them coming to our country? Can we send our soldiers in Mexico and overthrow the government? The Mexican government wants to get rid of them because the governor does not want to spend the money to help them. That's corrupt system.

I am stuck to bring this up on SSI and Marriage issue, but it is still part of the story.

I believe that older Mexican people like 30 or older can come over because they are grown adult and have the responsibility. But, bringing their teenagers are the one that cause the problem. The adult people have better skill than our America in some way, and they work so hard especially working outside in the hot weather. They could get SSI if they cannot find a job. It hurt us that we have to help them to get free medical even they do not have a green card.

I agreed with you this part 100%!

Looking for a hand out? If I was doing that I'd be on welfare not SSI!!! Welfare does pay better.

Why can't I work? There are medical reasons why; and what are those medical reasons? Well, to be frank, that’s none of your business.

I was told that Medicaid (or Medicare?) and welfare are required for you to have them. Medicaid is very risk because the government is allowed to take your house away when you dies. If you have a child(ren), they are forced to loose everything and find a place to live - except it cannot touch your children's bank - I don't remember now. If you don't believe me, you ask the agent about it. The best way is for you to set up a trust fund for your children until they die. Then, I assume that the government takes it away.

If you have Medicare, then it will not take your house away unless you live with your parent's home with their Medicare/Medicaid, and if your parent is at a nursing home for a long term, then, that could be a problem. I do not want to read everything on a long policy.

Medicaid info:

Overview
Estate Recovery
Treatment of Trusts

Medicaid changes its policy every few years without a notice.

Ummmm Medicare is not Medicaid.

It may feel like a penalty when SSI reduced from spouses earnings. But the intent of SSI is supplemental income to basically keep you alive and relatively comfortable at a minimum cost. It is not a pension or such. It is more like welfare...low cost. When your spouse works....you begin to get your SSI reduced after about $650 dollars of spouses earnings per month. Like a dollar per dollar after $650. So if she/he makes $950 take home for that month your SSI might be reduced 300. Somewhere in that area.
It really is like a penalty if raising kids. But get tax returns per child for working parent credit. It is a bit tight money and spouse can become resentful. And disagreements of monies.
If both on SSI and living tofether I believe both reduced some. But now the inbalanced income not there.

medicaid etc not able to take your estate/home upon illness untill after you reach 55.
