Don't throw your TTY away!

No, all postal employees must use a toll-free number given by USPS for sick calls. They even have a toll-free TTY number for deaf employees. Then the info is sent to the data system from the answering service center somewhere in the US. Sometimes a secretary in the office at the workplace accept sick calls but is not supposed to because that's what that toll-free number is for. USPS doesn't have an email address for that purpose. It's not a supervisor's job to take those calls since they are always on the workfloor.

"Carl" who got fired didn't call that number because his internet was down so he couldn't use VRS, didn't have a TTY and couldn't use his malfunctioning cellphone. He thought that it was a good excuse but when he came back to work after 4 days, he was written up for not calling in at all. So my point is that if he still had a TTY, that would not happen like this. Every one of us must call in, otherwise we will get an AWOL. USPS is very strict and professional.

Carl could have had his doctor call, his mother call, go to the place he got his meds from and called there, or even to the library.

I just see "dumbass" written all over that, i'm sorry to say.

Oh, well, he didn't do that because when he tried to call in, it was around 9 or 930pm before his begin time of work at 10pm, therefore his dr's office, pharmacy and library were closed at this time and her mom doesn't live in the US. What's more, it's inappropriate to ask a dr or pharmacist to call in for anyone. He could have gone next door but he doesn't like to bother them. If he had a TTY available, he would use it that night. That's his problem, nobody else's.

I see NOTHING wrong with a TTY as a back-up.

You're right, nothing is wrong with using that.

I just don't like the idea of keeping a prehistorical apparatus and paying for it just in case all the stars align and I am doomed to use it.

"Paying for it"?...They are free. And no extra or very little cost to ur phone bill. If ur not using it at all, wrap it up in plastic and put it away, take it back where you got it, or donate it to some other deafie who cannot afford Internet.

I remmy when I first got my TTY/TTD...It was given to me by the people that I work with, since I had 2 kids and could not afford one, and I depended upon my neighbors/friends to make phone calls for me, not my kids! At that time, it was so thrilling to make calls myself, and feel more independent.

Landline is $30+ a month.......... If I never used it, thats $360 a year down the drain.

I'll take the sidewalk, car, bicycle, cab to the nearest TTY if I have to.

That's exactly why I cancelled my landline. It's a waste of money especially because of Bell Canada sneaking in additional and unnecessary fees all the time that would force me to call them and have them remove them. I love that my cell won't take voice calls so it makes people to get in touch with me in other ways like email, texting or snail mail. It's wonderful!

While having a heart attack? During a home invasion?

During a home invasion I would tell the bad guy "Hold on a sec, lemme get a pen and paper" And hand him a scribbled note stating "Let me call the cops because I have a bad guy in the house" or something to that effect.

:)

Internet outage while I am having a heart attack? I would hope that never happens.

Landline prices vary by location. My brother pays only $15/month for his. Hubby and I pay a lot more because we have a separate business line. However, we save a little by not having long distance service.

I understand that no one wants to pay for a service that they don't use.

I guess I'm thinking more about people who don't have internet or cell phones. Since they're not paying for internet or cell service, the landline cost might be more economical for them.

Yeah, they don't even "count" in my discussion because they don't really have the opportunity to "move forward".

Its people like myself in this city, where they are installing wi-fi on the city buses, why would I want to hold onto that stuff?

I don't have a cellphone myself. So when my internet is down (VP will not work), my TTY would become helpful for me.

How can you call for help when your vehcile got accident or broke down and alone on the country road? TTY is helpful? That's what mobile for.

Landline and TTYs...no thanks. The employer should be understanding of the fact that deaf people have different ways of calling in sick...

I was not talking about a portable TTY. I was talking about the one that stays in home. Carl tried to call the employer from home at night, not outside of his home. But he failed to do so because his internet was down and his mobile was fucked up. That's all I talked about. That's why I brought it up. If you already got rid of your TTY, I don't give a shit.
