The world's second-ever octuplets were born

No, you're not. The only thing "wrong" about placing a special needs child (or children in this case) for adoption is the likelihood they would not be adopted and would live out their childhood in the foster care system. This is why this story appalls me so so so much. This woman could not care for these additional eight children, so the state is paying for them. This is in California where, apparently, the state paid for this woman's fertility treatments. I honestly didn't think any state would allow this, but California does.

I just spoke to my Mother about this and she is appalled as well. She thinks that alot of heads are going to roll and someone will have to answer to this somewhere down the line.

I don't think the state should be paying for fertility treatments. I think that is something that the person should pay for herself. Fertility treatment is not a necessary treatment to improve one's health, so why is the state of California paying for fertility treatments? It comes from taxpayers' money. That makes no sense. I wonder how the California taxpayers feels about this?

Hoever, once there it is too late to undo past wrongs. I comend the woman on the fact that she chose to carry all 8 to term.

Do you commend the woman on the fact that that many of these babies will end up with serious complications and health problems resulting from premature birth and NICU treatment and other stuff? Some of those babies might even die. That's not something I would commend. :nono:

You're not the only one who feels this way. I'm outraged and appalled.

Ugh. You're absolutely right, Lucia. The possible health consequences of this is staggering. I don't commend this woman at all. I think she's nuts. I think anyone who chooses to carry that many fetuses to term is out of their mind!

i can attest to that from my own personal experience of being a preemie. doctors told my parents that i carried a risk of having heart complications, lung complications, profound brain damage, cp, cognitive impairments and respiratory problems. fortunately, i escaped with only being totally deafblind.

I was a premie b/c I was a twin born 29 years ago. I have my complications and my sister does too. Should we have been aborted b/c of the extended complications of carrying multiples? Should our children be aborted b/c they have something wrong with them??

If that's the Mother's choice, then yes. However, twin pregnancies often do very well nowadays. What we are talking about is higher order multiple pregnancies that often result in life long complications. Its these pregnancies that needs to be addressed and selective reduction considered.

I understand that. But if someone ended up pregnant with high order multiples why should they feel they have to abort? I won't get on my soap box about abortions, but all babies rather having complications or not has the right to live.

Now I agree the lady should not have went in for those treatment and the whole thing shouldn't have happened, but I don't agree with aborting the "extra" babies

Twins usually don't have severe complications. So, no. The reason the doctors encourage aborting several fetuses in large multiple births is because otherwise most or all of the babies will have even worse complications...the bigger the multiple birth is, the worse the complications can/will be. Aborting several fetuses and reducing it to only two or three fetuses will improve the chances of the these fetuses surviving and having less complications upon birth, and they will have better chances of staying alive and having less complications as they grow up. Twins are not considered "large" multiple births, so usually abortions are not suggested.

Thats your right, but I would argue that by not reducing the pregnancy, a woman is not only putting her health in jeopardy, but the health of the fetuses as well. It's selfish to do this.

If mutli birth are so dangerous, why are they implanting so many embryos at once?

Lets also add in the health of the Mother as well. Carrying a litter is not easy on the woman's body. As the pregnancy advances, the woman gains an enormous amount of weight. Pregnancies such as this puts a tremendous strain on a woman's body. It's far better, I believe, to reduce a pregnacy then to continue knowing that the end result is going to be delivery of several very sick babies and possibly having a very sick Mom as well.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I just don't know how it would be possible for a mother to say okay abort baby b, d, e oh wait keep A..

My mother got pregnant for the 3rd time after having me and my younger sister. She had an abortion this time. Do I think she was selfish for having an abortion? No. We were not in a good situation to handle a third child. My mother was trying to get a divorce from my father (or rather, my younger sister's father - there is a lot of speculation as to whether he is my father), and therefore could not handle a third child on her own, with already me and my younger sister in tow. She was going to take me and my sister and bring us back home to Colorado, and start a new life, and back with my mother's family. We also did not have the money for a third baby, either. That year was a very chaotic year. My mother also had contracted Lyme's disease, and was going through treatment for it, and as soon as she was done with the treatment we were going to go back to Colorado. I was about 9 years old when all of this happened. I did not know she had an abortion at the time, but I found out several years ago, and when my grandmother told me what year my mother had the abortion, I remembered everything that happened that year, and I immediately understood my mother's reasons for having an abortion, and I do not blame her at all. My grandmother does not blame her for it, either.

Like I said I won't get on my abortion soapbox..Life is life, there's people out there that would adopt a baby

Yea, I dont blame her..have to take care of herself and others first..

My mother had contracted Lyme's disease when she got pregnant. Do you think it would be a good idea to attempt to carry a baby to term while going through treatment for Lyme's disease? Therefore the major reason for the abortion.

Women have abortions for several reasons. Your Mother should NOT be vilified for doing so.

As for this woman, she disgusts me. Willingly allowing someone to implant 8 babies into her uterus is just criminal in my mind. Someone should be held accountable for this.
