Sounds like you're on the right track. Some places have Community Centers that offer low cost intro ASL and most colleges offer it. Look into what resources are in your area and you might come across a mentor to help.

Learning ASL is a good thing regardless. And you're not weird for thinking the guy was cute. It matters what's inside, not the trappings. If you meet someone that is deaf, blind, etc, there's no reason to fear the unknown. You learn as you go. If he happens to be deaf you learn to communicate...
