Your home, preparing for...

I have gas heating system in my home and the price will hit high this winter, I brought three heating blankets for the three of us for the winter, because I might have to lower my thermostat setting to below 60, to save gas. I cannot afford a huge bill, All this effect the United States because of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. :(

We have to do whatever it takes to keep ur warm and cut down of using too much heat this winter. It's gotta be tough before it gets better. :mrgreen:

Oh YES! :doh:!! We better start to chop up our logs to be ready for those chilly nights. The house doesn't have insulation so when the night falls, it bites with 45degrees chills. >__< It was horrible last winter since I was not accustomed to my husband's house-- at least it will push up my threshold to bear the winter this time around?

(gently reminding Hubby about the firewood)!
 
Liebling and GalaxyAngel and others--ahh, no need to edit or delete posts in this thread, it's for anyone that will be preparing for the winter months coming up soon, I just mentioned America due to the fact when it's winter here, other parts of the world, it's summertime, like New Zealand for instance--and some of our members here in AD will be into the summer months.... ;)

One thing I've done here is caulking the windows and doorways where there is bound to be small cracks which cold air can get thru, sealing the noticeable spaces between the roof edge and gutter with roof caulking...checking the attic for noticeable drafts that can be closed up...installing a wood fireplace is something we do plan to do in the near future...(it's been a long time dream and desire that my dear ^Angel^ would like to have)...also, placing plastic on windows to cut out the cold drafts is another option to use...every small or big adjustment adds up and can help lower heating costs....

Ahhh.... Gladly you're understanding.. *whew* I wasn't expect..
So anyway.. Yeah I usually use plastic windows all over this house.. which senstive leaking.. cuz I cannot renovate this home because it's rent.. If suppose My own house.. would be very happy renovate newest window and secure.. NO LEAK!

Yep, that is what I brought, heating blankets for all of us. ANd I am going to lower the heating to 60 degree.. If we are too cold, put long john under the pants and put turtleneck and then sweatshirt over, it will keep warm and also wear socks and slipper, it will keep warm. Also walking around the house like cleaning, etc, it will warm up..

We cannot afford big heating bill.. :eek2:

*phew* :D thank you for understanding... I was like "Oh dear" after my 2nd post and deleted...

Now I´m going to post to remind you about pipes.

I know that everyone including me want to save our heating bill... it´s expensive... this year is the worst...

I have aload of woods for 3 fireplaces BUT I have to switch heating system on for heater on 1st November to protect pipes because of freeze... The pipes will freeze and damage, then it cost alot of money to repair... Heating system goes automaic for me if the weather is too freeze to protect pipes. (we have weather tempature into heating system). I would recommend you all to switch heater on (I mean not high heater but low to normal).

Of course, because I know you & Angel are romantic couple... you both will LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE it when you both have open fire place.... soooo lovelllyyyy feeeeeling when you watch at fire....

I have open fire place with glass door at 2nd living room and tiled stoves at 2nd living room and dinning room... but open fire place is the BEST..... I´m exciting for you both... :thumb:



P.S. we are going to change old earth to new for our green plants... we did last week and half of them are unfinish... to protect winter....
 
Oh YES! I can't wait to have a fireplace.....RR took care of most of the stuff that might help keep the heating cost down on the gas bill during the cold winter...
 
I fogot to mention that when we use our wood stove we also plug in our CO2 detector/alarm.
 
my plan is to use blanket lot to keep warm during no heat in winter save money on heat bills only use it at night time during bed time. use stove for heat, (my best suggestion to cook lot of dinners in oven it would help heat up the house/apt) Just dont use too much. Wear lot of winter clothes especially sweat clothes and thick socks.
 
We're all supposed to change our summer tires to winter tires by Nov 1, as required by the law in Norway.. even if it's not snowing. We must always keep our front headlights on everytime we drive even if it's daylight (always do that all year round, anyway!). It will start to get darker at 4pm by next week, they say.

Got summer stuff packed away, and starting to get the winter stuff out.. we're replacing a light bulb in the yard so we can see when we're walking up and down the long flight of stairs from and to the car or the house.

We're also piling up on plenty of firewood to warm up the house. The cats'll be home more often, so we're prepared to entertain them more.

I used to use the woodstove for many years but I have bad allergies from it .. I suffered for many years and didn't know till I moved to the apt and I used gas for heating and cookings and I didn't get sick?? weird?? 5 yrs ago, I moved back to my moms house as my mom got sick and need my help.. she used wood stove. She knew that I am allergic to the smoke so mom have to stop using the wood stove and switched to propane gas. My mom also put plastic sheet on windows to keep the drafts out.. The water Pump-we would put blanket over it and keep the door shut tight so it will not freeze. (we used the old freezer and cut out on bottom and put over water pump and we can say it does WORK) put old clothes rags or small baby blankets under the door to keep the drafts out. Sometimes it can be real cold in my room so I would use electricity blanket to keep me warm .. it does help!

Caulking, weather stripping, and window sealers can all help homeowners seal up some of the places where heat escapes and cold air comes in.

Oh yeah.... They said to replace your old fridge, freezer and etc as they use alots of electricity. The newer ones doesnt use much electricity so maybe yall should think about replacing them to save your money on bills? Look for the Energy star they are the ones they said are BEST on the market.

Look on your electricty website as well do also offers a service on its website that analyzes your home to see where you might be able to save some money.. maybe you will be alot surprised?

Speaking of slippers, matter of fact I do have bunny slippers, everytime I slip my feet into them, I feel like hopping away. :mrgreen: Oh and I didn't forget my bear slippers, the head is big enough to make you fell down the stairs. :giggle:
 
and dont forget the flannel pajamas.. LOL!!! hehe..

cute what u said.. cheri.. hehe.. i do have black slippers which are very comfortable.. cant live without them.. hehe..

kids nowadays wear the slippers to school.. believe it or not.. ugh.... haha
 
Hi All,

I check to make sure I can find my gloves, hat, and boots in the attic, I put the winter bedding on my bed - flannel sheets and stuff, buy salt for the front walk, find my ice scraper, and make sure I have windshield wiper fluid for my car.

It's awful when you are driving, and it snows, and then they salt the roads, and it gets on your windshield and you run out of the fluid to clean it.
 
Turned on the heater in the mornings, use blanket throws and wear socks. Light up candles which makes me feel warm by looking at it. Or cuddle up with my man in bed or couch lol
 
No matter where you live in the world you can still post here and tell us what you do to get ready for winter....as for me.

Fire wood

10 gal. of kerosene for lanterns..as I have the power go off a lot in the winter time.

Lay in a extra supply of food in case I can not get out on the road

Also change my BOB from spring/summer to Fall/winter.
 
Will be ready around Nov 1st... since we have a fireplace we will need to get plenty of woods, go shopping for more blankets and get this thingy for bottom of the doors to block the drafts. and the maitnece guy at our condo (rental) will come and clean the fireplace and replace the filter. get comfortable pj and get sweaters too. will use the heater when its NEEDED like 20s degree or blizzard.

Yes it's same with here in Germany, too. We changed our summer tires to winter tires on my VW Golf car today and BWM car on Friday.

We must always keep our front headlights on everytime we drive even if it's daylight (always do that all year round, anyway!).

Yeah, I remember the stories from my German friends where they visited your country. They are strict about car headlights for all the day. Why?

I have 2 rooms that I dont use at all so I closed the vent for that room and keep the rest of the house warm that way you dont waste on the heating oil or gas. This year I am going to cover my windows with plastic and install the weatherstrip for my front and back door and put the screw in for the back door since it was not straight grrrrrrrrrrrrr my exh took it out. Keep the heater lower to 60. Yea I have been using the heating pad under the blankie that help too.

Someday when I get my own house I will be the pellet stove to keep the house warm. I am looking at my next door neighbor to see if they have use their pellet stove yet. LOL but one of my neighbor have been using his woodstove for a while now.

Also keep a clear path from your vent or heating from blocking the area to prevent warming the house up. :D

I got my fuel assistance but not much thou :pissed:
