BEIJING (Reuters) - Nine out of 10 Chinese calling into a suicide-prevention hotline in the capital Beijing are getting the busy tone, a newspaper said on Monday, adding that nationwide four people were killing themselves every minute.

So far, more than 110,000 people had dialed in to the Beijing Suicide Research and Prevention Center hotline since it was set up in Beijing last year, the China Daily said.

It quoted an expert as saying poverty, unemployment, bereavement, breakdowns in relationships or legal and work-related problems were all causes.

But a lack of funds meant that not everyone who needed the hotline was getting through, said Michael Phillips, executive director of the suicide prevention center.

"Nine of every 10 persons only hear a busy tone," he told the newspaper. "It's very dangerous because they may be at high risk of committing suicide."

Stress in urban China has increased with 20 years of economic reforms, increased competition, job losses, breakup of the traditional family unit in the cities and the dismantlement of cradle-to-grave welfare benefits.

And, the question that almost never gets answered: Why?

That is really dangerous when the line gets busy and those people who are calling in have no time to sit and wait...

There should be a community in their hometown that can open 24 hours that anyone can walk in and get the help they need quicker than being on hold or getting a busy signaler. Remember those people who call in are in emotion state, They need help and they want it now. They need an incredible amount of work to do in their community. It can save lives.

I agree. I am not sure when and how long China have been using that service. I got the feeling that they will improve or expand some more people to be able to handle many calls.

5 secs or 1 minute can make any difference in their lives.

They should have done their work on statistics before setting this thing up. That way, they would have known how many people to have receiving calls.

It stated that the program started last year in the original post.

Call me hypocritical but IN A WAY I actually believe we should allow suicides. It's for the enviromental reasons that I have. I don't like the sound of it either.
For moral reasons, I don't support suicides.

We have too many people on the Earth for me to accept.
