PLANO, Texas - A woman with a history of postpartum depression cut off the arms of her baby daughter Monday, then called 911 and waited calmly until police arrived, authorities said.

"She wasn't trying to hide," police spokesman Carl Duke said.

Dena Schlosser, 35, was charged with capital murder after the girl died at a hospital in Plano, a Dallas suburb. Child-protection authorities said the mother had shown signs of postpartum depression in the past, but there had been no signs of violence.

Authorities said when they arrived at the family's apartment, they found the nearly 11-month-old baby in a bedroom with her arms severed. Schlosser, covered in blood, was sitting in her living room.

It was not immediately clear what Schlosser used to sever the baby's arms, police said.

Schlosser lived at the apartment with other family members, including her two older daughters. The girls, ages 6 and 9, were at school and their father was at work when police arrived, Duke said.

Texas Child Protective Services was called to the home in January after Schlosser was seen running down the street from her apartment, with one of her daughters, then 5, bicycling after her, authorities said. When police and CPS arrived, the child told them her mother had left her 6-day-old baby sister alone in the apartment.

Schlosser appeared at the time to be suffering from postpartum depression and seemed to be having a psychotic episode, said Marissa Gonzales, a CPS spokeswoman.

Schlosser was hospitalized for a few days. Her other two daughters were released to their father, who told authorities Schlosser had been acting strangely since the birth of the third child.

Once she was released from the hospital, Schlosser agreed to seek counseling and see a psychiatrist, Gonzales said. Caseworkers continued to visit the family through the spring and summer, and the case was closed Aug. 9.

"There were never any indications of violence with this family," Gonzales said. "The children had always been healthy, happy and cared for."

Gonzales said CPS was interviewing Schlosser's other children and would talk to the father before deciding whether to remove the children from the home.

No one answered the door Monday night at the family's apartment.

Neighbors said she seemed to be a loving, attentive mother.

Dena Livingston, 43, said she saw Schlosser making her rounds with the stroller on Sunday. She saw her Friday waiting with her baby outside the school the older girls attend.

"She didn't give off like she was in a distant world or didn't care about the baby," Livingston said.

Twelve-year-old Fernando Pereira said he watched Schlosser buckle her children's seat belts and lock their car doors each morning as they headed off to school.

"All I saw in the morning was kisses and she gave them hugs. That was it," he said. "She never said anything bad or rude to her children."

Crikeys...as the story indicated that this mother was affectionate and caring...yet, something overwhelmed her with the condition she is diagnosed to the point of fatally harming the child...destroying all the future 'moments' she could have had with this child...and the child having the opportunity to live a life...indeed this is a horrendous and cruel act brought about by this mother...may the child's soul rest in peace and justice served accordingly!

Today i noticed "new" mommy had a baby and her body change by mood, physical appearance, "baby blue", and many issues. Today mothers tend to commit suicide by herself or put harm on her new baby or both. I think mother had so many fears from herself like is she good mom? is her baby love her? and many images as sometime don't come exist. I hope today will be improving which Social worker, Doctor, or Counsolor will help prevent from Mental Illness and maybe save Baby's life as who know? I wish something that can be change like Nurse give out the paperwork and new mother will put confidential as her free will. So they can help Mother s emotional stress to get better and protect the baby from harm. So she can feel safe and more loveable with her baby.

it was sad!! i think the mom of the newest addition should have had someone ELSE there at the home with her to assist in caring for the baby (be it her mom, other family members who are able to observe and assist if needed) and watch for her PPD symptoms that were already documented and yet ignored! nobody was really paying CLOSE enough attention to this mom and she needed some additional help to deal with PPD while caring for this baby and she got none and now a child's life was cut short and the mom is charged

if this mom's PPD was already documented and the symptoms were recognized WHY the hell didnt she get the additional help she needed qq saying things like "she didnt exhibit PPD symptoms at the time the child was in her custody... yadda yadda" doesnt seem to be enough -- someone should have been there WITH her to be sure nothing drastic happened and see what best avenue to take -- get mom on meds to prevent further PPD episodes and/or have her put in the hospital temporarily and let the child be cared for by other family members including the dad so that way the mom would have a lil time and a chance to combat her PPD symptoms and have it under control -- CPS obviously didnt do enough in this case since its said they were involved with this case as with other cases where a child(ren) were killed and/or injured severely

Hmm... this probably why China has this strict rule with how many children are allowed in their homes? :dunno:

Oh my God, that's soo awful *sigh*...

That is quite sad for the mother to do such a thing like that even through she has no idea what she had done, But still she isn't stable enough to take care of her children. I think the children should be taken away from her until she gets the help she needs.

I totally agree with you FlyFree, It should have been stopped right there before went any further with the baby's arm. Child Protection Service did not protect the children. Big mistakes on their part, they seem to make way too much mistakes. We put our trust in Child Protection Service, sometimes they do not take their job seriously and save children. :o
