Who is AG Bell

The oral deaf schools orgionally started out as either for the late deafened kids( there were lots of those in the old days) or for the kids who had some decent hearing, but couldn't swing it in regular schools.
That's what I understood from reading The Annual Report of Mystic Oral School.
I think the orgional purpose of the schools was well intentioned. Back then the mainstream schools were NOT open to us.
Postlingal kids may not really identify with Deaf culture or ASL. Nothing wrong with that. But the problem was that AG Bell thought that if a kid had some hearing, they were automaticly more hearing then deaf, and so should be encouraged at all costs to assilimlate into hearing society.
I do think that AG Bell the organization is incredibily naive. Yes, oral abilty rocks. ...and I do support and encourage dhh kids right to develop oral skills.It's exactly like how if you speak Spanish as your native language (in this country) English abilty is ALSO super helpful. BUT, why the hell should oral only be the ONLY tool a dhh kid has?
Isn't being bilingal, and being able to function both with and without HAs/CIs important too? I also think that AG Bell is fucking clueless that not every mainstreamed dhh kid is going to be one of those kids who only needs minimal accomondations to suceed. They also don't realize that not every mainstream school is a good one.
 
Oh,and AG Bell was NOT the one resposible for shuttering Deaf Schools. He was the orgionator of that dumbassed idea, but the simple fact of the matter is that, the closing of the Deaf Schools have more to do with the fact that many parents are unaware of the deaf school option. They think mainstream is all there is, or that deaf schools are just for voice off kids.

I understand that his wife Mabel who was late-deafened, didn't want to have anything to do with the deaf community.

I hate it when people call my CI a miracle. Such people don't realize that a CI does not make my hearing normal.

thats right he did, it was also part of technology which effectively laid the pathways to 'scientific indoctrination' that directed the medicalisation of deafness

with invention of skype , deaf people USE it, make it So popular itd embarrass the Bell company, like why should they havent ever thought the days of Skype to arrive, furthermore its so popular because NO long distance PHONE BILLS, its sure to fuck up their Business!!
 
So, AG Bell has nothing to do with shuted down deaf schools? In fact, Nc deaf school is in risk of shut down...

He is not directly responsible for it but the organization does promote deaf children being mainstreamed over going to Deaf schools. In fact, the organization really hasnt shown any positive support to deaf schools from what I have seen and read.

THey even can shut MSSD down? Can't we just stand up and fight against them? What about our rights? Isn't deaf school part of our rights?

They got the medical community with all the money behind them, that's why.

They dont go out and shut schools down but the goal is to mainstream as many deaf children as they can. They dont give a damn about deaf schools.

It comes down to a matter of numbers enrolled. If enough parents refuse a deaf school placement, the schools will close.

I believe Iowa school for the blind is closing this year for just that reason.
