What Percentage Is Your Hearing Loss?

Bingo. And the loss on the good side is only in the upper frequencies. I essentially function as a hearing person, but with a hell of a lot of difficulty.

I can understand that. I remember a conversation I had with my audi who fitted me with my first pair of hearing aids. She told me that the degree of difficulty a person has hearing isn't always determined by their level of hearing loss since some people with mild hearing loss struggle to understand speech more than those who have moderate loss, etc.

bottesini,
You have a very similar loss as I do. Wich hearing aids do you use? do you consider yourself hard of hearing or Deaf/deaf?

Hi Adam,

I have at the moment two BTE Siemens SP.

I pretty much have considered myself hard of hearing.

My ASL teacher is pretty blunt about telling me I am deaf.

So I am sort of stuck in the middle. Don't know where I belong really.

That probably isn't helpful, sorry. How about you, Adam, same questions.:)

bottesini,
I have a profound loss in the left ear. up until a few weeks ago it was about 110db I had to have a Labyrinthectomy in October which destroyed any residual hearing that i had in that ear. The loss in my right ear is at around 70db. I started to lose my hearing in both ears about 12 years ago ( I am 40 now). I had inner ear issues which required surgery to stop any more loss as i had a perilymph fistula. 3 surgeries and 12 years later it is at a profound loss. I started to lose hearing in my right ear around the same time but they don't know why I started losing it in that ear.
I have Phonak Bi-cross Savia 211's right now. I have used up all the power these have and need something stronger. I am also going to go to another audiologist. I haven't been happy with the care I have recieved over the last couple of years and think it might be time for me to move on to another audie. I have an appointment with one on Friday.
I definitley consider myself hard of hearing at this point. I do feel like I am stuck in between two worlds though. I haven't been involved in the Deaf community at all until a few years ago. My ASL is at level 1 so it is extremley difficult to communicate to the Deaf. This makes it a real challenge if I go to a Deaf function. Most social functions I go to with hearing people are also difficult as the more backround noise(and it doesn't take much) the less I can understand. You can tell people what it is like but I don't think they can really grasp how difficult it can be.
I will be talking to the audie about what my options are as far as aids go. Do you like the ones you have now?

Adam

I do like my aids, but I know no two people are alike so it doesn't mean much for what they would be like for you. Also I think I forgot to say the model is Centra.

I have always had hearing loss so I have an idea it is a lot worse for you than it is for me, because it seems like people who started out hearing and lost it, are very upset about things they heard before and can't now.

Good luck with your new audiologist, and I hope it all works out to make you happy.

the percentages prolly were for your speech descrimination
i.e. 90% of words understood at 65dB

I still do poorly here. On phone worse or course. I will go over all my test results when I get home and report. I may be mistaken then. But many hearing impaired relate to me their hearing loss in percentage, 80%, 90%, etc. Thx all.

You're welcome, restless_heart. :)

By the way, I also experience tinnitus whenever I have my hearing tested (even when my CIs are on). It's very frustrating when I can't tell the difference between the beep tones and the high pitched beeping in my ears!

exactly!!! I did warn my doctor everytime I take the test, I used to have mild to severe hearing loss, but with ringing in my ear, it is now moderate to severe hearing loss...High pitch is the only sound I was ALWAYS unsure of, haha...

I cannot wear my hearing aid on the good ear because every time I do, I get ringing in the ear alot after I was in a very loud enviroment like a concert or something like that, even if I never wore hearing aid on that ear...

I never get CI, they said I am quailfy on the bad ear, but I decided I am happy the way it is. it is clear on that ear, I am ok with the hearing aid I have on now.

That's cool, restless_heart. :)

I also waited a long time (10 years) before finally deciding to get CIs and even when I did, it was primarily for my own personal safety.

I have been totally deaf on my right ear with no hearing aid. On my left ear, I am wearing my hearing aid which I could hear sounds but not very well until later on when I hear the muffle sound and my hearing specialist told me that I am profoundly deaf on my left ear. My hearing will go down slowly and will become deaf without my hearing aid soon. I really don't mind but I will miss the sounds. My body and my life is changing and it is not the same like I was before. Oh, well. :(

Word.

I have no residual hearing in either ear. My right ear lost its hearing first, then my left followed closely behind. For several years, my left ear had much better hearing than my right. From what I understand, there is no known technology that could ever allow me to hear again. I don't have a problem with that since since losing the last of my hearing, I'm much more relaxed since I'm no longer struggling to understand the residual sounds. It just all happened so suddenly, so I'm trying to understand the psychological and physiological effects of it. In some ways, it isn't as easy as I thought, yet in other ways, it's much easier.

I don't remember which left n right but one side is 95 dercibels and other side is 90 dercibels, I believe. I think I have the chart somewhere on file.

SimplyMints,

You mean a CI wouldn't benefit you? If you don't mind my asking, why not? Do you have severed auditory nerves? If so, you could take advantage of an ABI (auditory brainstem implant) which works similarly to a CI except that it stimulates the brainstem rather than the auditory nerve.

Brain stem implant? That sounds too risky for my tastes! Though nobody has told me of it until now that I recall.

Correct, CI's won't work, nor would auditory nerve implants (which have yet to be tested on humans). The auditory nerve is the problem.

I'm quite satisfied the way things turned out though because I was afraid something bad was growing in my ears, like cancer or something, and since the cause of my hearing loss will not be the cause of my death, I'm very happy. :)

I have at least above 100 db in each ear. So I am profound :deaf:

CI surgery will make your ears to be around 30db that is damn good but need to learn how to speech/listening like a baby again.

Latest audiogram results: 105 db lost in right ear. 115 db lost in left ear. That puts me in the deaf category.

Both of my ears are severe-profound i think i dont know what percentage this is

Profoundly deaf in both: 100dB at 500, 120 db at 1000, NR above. Both ears almost identical.

80% and 88% without hearing aids. I get confused on which I am supposed to use: Deaf or HOH. For now I use HOH.
