Legally, they are well within their rights to turn away any customer they want. Small businesses have that right.
Are you sure about that? Small businesses are allowed to discriminate people? No, it doesn't sound right to me, unless you live in a backward country, which the US is not.
I don't think you should waste your time writing to the owner. You should write to a newspaper/local newspaper about your experience. There may even be websites that allow customers to review restaurants which you could use against him. I am sure that the more people who know about your experience, the more people who will not eat at his restaurant; like you said customers were even appalled and I am sure these customers are going to tell their families and friends.

I went out to eat at a restaurant today, and they told me that I needed to leave because they do not serve deaf people. Period.
Geez!

What the hell? I would stand there and scream and stomp my feet and demand to be served! Let them arrest me and then the media will come out and publicity embarrass that restaurant! That is SO wrong!
deafbajagal - please give us name and location of that restaurant. we'll raise hell with them for you
Well, it was a privately owned Chinese restaurant (not a chain restaurant). Legally, they are well within their rights to turn away any customer they want. Small businesses have that right. What I am doing is telling everyone I meet (strangers and friends) about the experience. Many people were appalled and even said they won't go back there again. I will write a letter to the owner (I have a good hutch that the man who told me I couldn't eat there was the owner) about what I think of the experience in a professional tone.
Geez, I hate rude and inconsiderate people!

Yes, they do not allow discriminate the people but they have the right to not serve them for no reason if they want to. It's their business, they can do what they want. If they give you the reason why they do not serve you because of your deafness, etc is then discrimination. It would cost business owner a lot of money for discriminate the people why they refuse to serve them... that's why they keep the reasons themselves quietly then you can't do anything to against them because they didn't give you their reason.

Yes, I think he should write a letter to demand with reason or write complaint letter to the owner first. He will know more after get the reply.... He will get a good chance to prove that it's discrimination if deafness is the reason, they refuse to serve him.

I don't think it would be good idea... The resturant owner might sue him for defamatory. First thing is contact Attorney General's office (Legal adviser) and will know more about rights.... If Attorney General Officer said that he have 100% chance to sue the resturant owner for discrimination... and said that you can go to local newspaper... If Attorney General Officer said it's not dscrimination, then you can't go to local newspaper to defame them... they can sue him for that...

I had similar experience at Union Station. The UNO restaurant refused to serve deaf people, because they always escape away from the table right after they eating. What are you going to do about it if you are UNO restaurant manager?
Well, that happened to be before at IHOP last year.
