What do you think? Would you accept a face transplant after an accident? Would you donate your face? Is this ethical or moral?

The doctor gets paid because the surgery is his/her job and that's what happens when you have a job, you get paid. The hopsital gets paid to cover the costs of operating a hospital and to pay for the equipment etc. The drug companies get paid b/c the hospital bought their products and the patient will continue to do so. The donor doesn't get paid because he/she is DEAD (typically). If the donor is alive, he/she donated the organ out of the goodness of his/her heart, usually for a family member. The donor's family doesn't get paid blue cross, it doesn't cost them anything to donate the organs. That's the whole point to donating. You're helping to save another life out of the kindness of your heart. Otherwise it would be called selling your organs.

Society puts on those who are scarred or deformed.

donate my face? that may freak out my kids. just when they think i'm gone.......knock knock....

Yes.

I don't see any moral/ethnical issues concerning this. You have to remember that faces does tend to make an impact on their self-esteem and life.

Especially for the fire victims.

If plastic surgery's useless in this case. Then I think I'm okay with the idea of face transplant. It'd be a long journey in life getting used to a face that isn't your own.

If the dead donor wanted it done. They'll likely opt for cremation. So it's not really a issue.

You should be asking yourself this...

Should you accept an organ transplant after your organ has gone bad?
Should you accept CI after your hearing has gone bad?
Should you accept a limb transplant after losing a limb?

If you can say "yes" to these questions, then you can say "yes" to accepting a face transplant.

The misconception that some people have about a face transplant is that they think too much like the movie, Face/Off.

When one get a face transplant, the facial mask itself will adjust to the skull and muscle structures of yours giving it a different look from the donor.

:werd: It's just a bunch of paranoia.

If my children's face is bitten by a dog or third degree burns etc leaving a disfigure face, I would welcome a face surgicial to make its life look normal as much as I can.
People are cruel and making life unbearable if they scare at my children, I won't do that as it will crash their self esteem and more.

One lady here is infamous as her face is shot by her ex lover, she become famous for staying alive, but her face is still no good, despite hundreds of time operations on her face. A new face mask will make it much easier I believe? I won't like to go through under surgeon knife thousands of times, it is better to have face mask for once or two operations is enough for me to go through.

I read a british magazine, a man is alive despite no eyes, no nose because of cancer tumour, and leaving a big gap of face hole, his throat keeping him alive, and he is wearing a plastic mask with fake eyes and nose!!

Why not accept the face surgical if its useless to the deceased as heaven won't need it, we people need organ here to keep it alive, healthy and looking good.

Yes the face won't make it replica of the deceased's face because everyone has different shape of the skull and teeth, and color of their hair etc.

Isabelle Dinoire, the woman who received the world's first partial face transplant with a new nose, chin and mouth in a transplant operation on Nov. 27, 2005, addresses reporters during her first press conference since the transplant at Amiens hospital, northern France Monday Feb. 6, 2006. AMIENS, France - The Frenchwoman who received the world's first partial face transplant showed off her new features to the public Monday, saying in a heavily slurred voice that she now looks "like everyone else" and hopes to resume a normal life.

Isabelle Dinoire's speech was difficult to understand, but she explained how she was disfigured by a dog bite last year, and she thanked the family of the donor who gave her new lips, a chin and nose.

A circular scar was still visible where the face tissue was attached in the 15-hour operation in Amiens on Nov. 27.

"I have a face like everyone else," Dinoire said at her first news conference since the groundbreaking surgery in November. "A door to the future is opening."

In speech that was heavily slurred, she explained how she was mauled by a dog last year and thanked the family of the donor who gave her new lips, a chin and nose.

Dinoire, who is in her late 30s, appeared to still have great difficulty moving or even closing her mouth, which often hung open. But she said that she was regaining sensation.

"I can open my mouth and eat. I feel my lips, my nose and my mouth," she said. During the news conference, while one of her surgeons was speaking, she lifted a cup to her lips and appeared to drink.

In terms of coloring, the match between her own skin and the graft was remarkable. When she laughed, she was able to slightly lift a corner of her mouth but appeared unable to bring her lips together to form a full smile.

She said she was pursuing physical therapy and noted that she will have to continue taking drugs to stop her body from rejecting the donated tissue. Yet, she looked forward to the future and said she is eager to return home.

"I expect to resume a normal life ... I pay homage to the donor's family," she said. "My operation could help others to live again."

Her doctors, who also attended the news conference, said they have asked French health authorities for permission to perform another five face transplants. Doctor Jean Michel Dubernard said they want "to give this operation to many, many other people in France and in the world."

The surgeons defended their decision to go ahead with the untried procedure, saying they repeatedly warned Dinoire about the risks involved. The doctors said they could not say for sure how long the transplanted tissue might stay alive.

Dinoire, a divorced mother of two teenage daughters, spoke frankly about the attack in May by her Labrador. She said she was wrestling with personal problems at the time, had had a trying week, and "took some drugs to forget," which knocked her out.

She said she was passed out when the dog bit her, and she did not immediately realize the extent of her disfigurement when she awoke.

"When I woke up, I tried to light a cigarette, and I didn't understand why I couldn't hold it between my lips," she said.

"I looked at myself in the mirror, and there, horrified, I couldn't believe what I saw _ especially because it didn't hurt. Ever since this day, my life has changed."

She also explained the difficulties of life with disfigurement, saying she suffered stares when she went out.

"I understand all people who have a handicap," she said.

She said she "accepted immediately" when her surgeons suggested the transplant. But the procedure did not restore the way she looked before the dog bit her.

"There's no comparison between the face I have today and the face I had seven months ago," she said. "It is totally different."

Doctors have said they hoped Dinoire would break her smoking habit because it can lead to complications affecting her recovery.

Yeah I'll do it, but I won't do it for people to accept me. I won't force myself to make people accept me. I won't do it in order to have boyfriend, nope.

I would do it because if it helps people in future and to make medical technology system better.
And to make myself look better, so I can look at my face and be happy.

I admire that lady for the courage.

Nah, I woukd like to but I am keeping my face I have now, I don't care what people say about my face....

People will be cruel to me no matter how I look like. Look at that plain looking girl who was beaten to death and rape by predator.

Even the Miss Beauty Pagent woman was found dead in her apartment when cops failed to pay the ransom money.

Nancy Kerrigan admitted she is anorextic,
She is so pretty.

So forget it....

I can get a job, I can buy myself a house and new car and have babies and marry.

But I don't want that....
I took a test on the internet, "how sinful are you".
And the result was "greed", I want luxury like Oprah has. :squint: :P
