Voice over ip? baby dies because ip wont call 911

Why did they use an Internet phone service provider? Why cant they just use a regular phone that way it easy for them to call an emergency and have them to come over immediately.

I'm not sure but I think they didn't have regular phone service. In the linked story, it looks like they quit the regular phone and got the IP to replace it. The story said, "Cheryl Waller and her family recently signed up for Vonage's voice-over-IP service to save money." I am just guessing.

If they have a low income then they can ask for saving money information. For instance.. we do have a VP and they warned us .. we can't call 911 through vrs because they will not trace us except the center. That is a reason why we need to keep phone line on.

I agree that for safety reasons people should keep a land line phone connection.

During bad storms, such as hurricanes, the cell phone service goes down but the land-line corded phones stay on. The cordless phones depend on electrical power and can also go down. We had that experience. After the hurricane, the land-line corded phones worked fine but the cordless and cell phones did not. That's why we keep one cheap simple corded phone always connected.

Thats why Ive always told my friends to have a phone with local service only (no long distance, no frills) - its only about 20-25 a month and they will be safer for all that.

Yes, that is how we set it up, without long distance.

I like how RI 911 works. In RI, you place a 911 call, it goes to a central 911 dispatch for the state. Depends on the priority, the operator will either transfer your call to the appropriate agency, staying on the line until the call is finished, or gather information and pass it to the approprate agency. Being on a cell phone, your call always goes to the right department.

VoIP has its advantages and disadvantages. As you can see, getting emergency calls through is a problem. If you get a VoIP service, you should have a list of your local emergency numbers by or on the phone, just like the old days before 911 (yes, I remember those days).

Some phone companies may allow you to keep a dial tone for 911 calls only. I believe that is the law in RI...a phone carrier can't disconnect your phone physically by disconnecting the wires at the pole unless you request it.

I personally don't have a physical phone connection in my house. I don't feel the need for it. I am single, have no kids, and feel that if I had an emergency, my cell phone will do just fine. I don't nearly use the amount of minutes that I have for my cell (SKII) becaue I am not a big phone talker.

Geez...

Should have provide for Deaf people their needs contact emergency if 911 not recoglized tty device that big problem issues...

Also diffculities for Deaf people who need emergency contact by cell or other kind device would be great for VP.. easier communcation without misunderstanding their grammer or barriers so many issues.

Unbeivable... Deep sorry about situation baby dies..
If I were their shoes.. I would sue'em no matter what issues "Lack of 911 where requires communcation" Should have SGP= track down the owner home or owner's cell phone.

Eternity, specific if you want use phone just leave it on and until too many firetrucks/police/alumance all over swarming.. which one do you really contact w/ specific you need ask for emerency? That major problem some of other places 911 doesn't have provide TTY ? how can deal w/911 which it's really seriouis.?

In my homearea 911 doesn't have provide tty ? Making me fuming every minutes, and spoke them out "Pay attention, no matter what how many Deaf people who living in small town, important in case tty provide for 911 needs nececssary emergency?" They repiled.. Oh sorry I didn't know.. How their service full of crap an excuses!
I'm trying to find BIG HOLE KEY and make'm them wake up call!

9-1-1 centers are, by law, supposed to be accessible to anyone. Many, if not all, are equipped with TTYs. Few, but not many, are trained on how to use them right.

You do NOT need phone service to use 9-1-1! Your line will always work with 9-1-1 even if you do not pay for phone service.

The person who paid for VOIP services should have been made aware that she can still use her land line for emergencies.

I agree with all above on your post. It's not easy for Deaf to access the phone. it is not a full 100% for that.

also my mom still has phone line so she already called fyi 911 and set up for deaf if ER...

FYI many of you don't realize this. Even if you had cut off local phone service and connect to any kind of communication. VoIP is one of them which is much cheaper than local phone company. Where can you beat 15 bux a month unlimited calls with VoIP??? In reality, FCC prohibits complete disconnection of landline phone service, mandates "Red" phone made available at NO charge. Phone companies are REQUIRED by FCC to leave the line open for 911 calls only. As right now I don't subscribe phone service to local phone company. I don't see why I should pay 30 dollars a month for my phone to sit and do nothing for whole year. I now use Videophone. Now, because of FCC regulation prohibits 100% disconnection on phone line. I was ABLE to call 911 directly using my TTY on that disconnected phone line!!! NOT A PROBLEM! At first I don't believe my friend comment about this. Until I had emergency, true business my friend was right. It is responsible for everybody to leave "Red" phone around the house even though the service is completely disconnected.

In addition to the FCC regulation with landline phone service, Cell phone now are required to include GPS device, and works with 911 dispacher only. Meaning 911 dispacter will be able to locate your sidekick II down to just 3 feet from where it is actually located! So, if you dial 911 on SK, or other newer phone device, trust me, cops will be right there in 5 minutes to assist whatever is needed. As of right now, not all 911 dispacher have that technology. But eventually all of them will have it.
I can see why people are not aware of it. We have had landline phone for over 120 years, and that phone system had changed practically overnight.

Diehardbiker,

That what I wanted issues about GPS specific no matter what emergencies which there have provide in usa only.. What fuk where provide in canada yet? That key pretty biggest issues lack of GPS/911 connection w/sidekick or other kind of brand in Canada. Which is really quite poorer their systems.

I kept eye wide open and to making sure there's release 110% GPS come w/other devices provide would be greater faster accessable in canada ready.

isn't this supposed to be in the current events?

anyway...it was pretty stupid that the IP refused to do something like that when there's an emgerency such as a dying baby...even if they think it's false, they just have to call 911, no matter what.

I was afraid that someone was vandalizing my house and I did eventually had to call 911 in my small town last month, they did answer it but was not that quite familiar with tty method...like "ga" ...not so good in case of emergency. ugh.

i think no matter where you are, you have the rights to call 911 like cellphone can call like umm 711 or was it 411? whatever. why can't ip too?

That's the problem. Also, not all cell phones or carriers are up-to-date with the technology. It is improving, but it is not yet available for everyone.
