Valentines Day Rant

The day after Christmas, I noticed that the stores already stocked up on Valentines Day merchandise. What is up with this ever increasing commercialism on holidays, especially Valentine's Day?

For me, while growing up, Valentine's Day was always nervewacking, wondering if the cutest guy in my class would send me a Valentine. Each of us had to make and decorate a shoe box and place it on upper left corner of our desk. Each morning, I sweated it out by peeking inside the slit to see whether I got more Valentines or not.

On the day of Valentines Day, we all had to show to each other how many valentines we got or whether we got one from that particular popular guy or whether we got any secret admirers. In high school, the girls had contest to see who got the most flowers or chocolates. I won a few of these but I always felt horrible about these girls who never got a single rose or card, etc.

To this day, I still feel pressured and tense with these unrealistic expectations. Sad to say, it does affect our self esteem.

I already noticed a few signatures with Valentines Day greetings or how Valentine Day will suck this year on AD.

I am curious to know if any of you really enjoy Valentines Day?? These of you who are lucky enough to have a beloved one, I am sure you guys enjoy it but does your expectations ever get met?

This year, Valentines Day will suck for me but I am trying not to let all that society pressure get to me. Your thoughts on Valentines Day? Did you guys get humiliated while growing up or whatnot?

i am with you, meggie all the way!! which is why i DREAD this holiday!! and always look forward to the day it ENDS.. so people stop going GUNGHO and whatnot.. :ugh:

I bet it is, afterall, you must have something planning for your sweetheart on Valentine's Day, anything you want to share with us?.... :naughty:

I don't have a boyfriend but I always spoil myself with what i wud want for valentine's day it lifts me up when I get what I want to make myself feel better and remember it falls on a dead monday so I don't really give a damn about valentine's day while I am at work anyways.. ;)

I read those posts here and surprised to know that Valentine Day means some of you alot.

I has to agree with Kuiji75.

My hubby surprised me with flowers, pretty decoration on the table, candle lit dinner eg to celebrate on any occassion in any months, not just that Valentine Day. My birthday date is very close to Valentine Day but I'm happy that my hubby gave me bunch of flowers on my birthday because it's close to Valentine Day.

We go out alone when we feel mood, not just that Valentine Day.

We (co-workers) received flowers, chocolates etc from our boss and some of male co-workers every year. My boss invite us to go canteen with him.

When I was in high school, they always had this carnation exchange on V-day. The different color carnations meant different things. The red ones, of course, were exchanged by sweethearts, symbolizing love. There were also pink, white and yellow...one of them meaning friendship and the others, I'm not even sure. Just goes to show you, LOL, I never got any on Valentines' Day. Carnation Drive was run by the class president and her goons...i.e. the popular ones that are on every damn page of our yearbooks...LOL.

I recall some of the cheerleaders walking around with carnations in their hair, in their bookbags, etc...some of them even had enough carnations to make a bouquet. I'd see 'em stuck in lockers too.

There was one year, perhaps my 3rd in HS. I found a carnation on the floor of the cafeteria...it was a little messed up and wilted. It was not the red one, but instead either white or yellow. I didn't want to see it go to waste. Hoping that it meant friendship, I gave it to my best friend and said "You know, this is way overrated, but I wanted you to have one." She retaliated by sending me a friendship carnation the following year.

Valentines' Day is only really nice when you have someone. I am fortunate to say my husband is very thoughtful on V-Day. He will usually bring me home flowers and a card, which is awesome.

I do know what it's like not to have someone, though Meg. I totally get it. For years, I was the one that was just plain easy to overlook. :grouphug:

Some of them isnt favor into Valentine Day, I had asked one of my ex. She gave me NO. I was surprised that some people doesn't enjoy. I grow up with good symbol of valentines day but I am BIG lousy at giving but I DO received.

I like to see my gf happy with me this year.... I know we will be busy on valentines day and weekend before valentines day being out of town.

remind me I need card for her soon! ;)
