Meg said:The day after Christmas, I noticed that the stores already stocked up on Valentines Day merchandise. What is up with this ever increasing commercialism on holidays, especially Valentine's Day?
For me, while growing up, Valentine's Day was always nervewacking, wondering if the cutest guy in my class would send me a Valentine. Each of us had to make and decorate a shoe box and place it on upper left corner of our desk. Each morning, I sweated it out by peeking inside the slit to see whether I got more Valentines or not.
On the day of Valentines Day, we all had to show to each other how many valentines we got or whether we got one from that particular popular guy or whether we got any secret admirers. In high school, the girls had contest to see who got the most flowers or chocolates. I won a few of these but I always felt horrible about these girls who never got a single rose or card, etc.
To this day, I still feel pressured and tense with these unrealistic expectations. Sad to say, it does affect our self esteem.
I already noticed a few signatures with Valentines Day greetings or how Valentine Day will suck this year on AD.
I am curious to know if any of you really enjoy Valentines Day?? These of you who are lucky enough to have a beloved one, I am sure you guys enjoy it but does your expectations ever get met?
This year, Valentines Day will suck for me but I am trying not to let all that society pressure get to me. Your thoughts on Valentines Day? Did you guys get humiliated while growing up or whatnot?
