Teen Receives 196-Year Prison Sentence - News Story - WHNS Greenville

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Prosecutors said Friday that a Spartanburg teenager who pleaded guilty to burglary and robbery charges received a nearly 200-year prison sentence.

According to Principal Deputy Solicitor Barry Barnette, 19-year-old Cory Demond Linder pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree burglary, one count of second-degree burglary, two counts of armed robbery and one count of possession of a pistol during a violent crime.

Barnette said Circuit Judge J. Mark Hayes II sentenced Linder to three 40-year sentences on the first degree burglary charges, two 30-year sentences for the armed robbery charges, a 15-year sentence for the second-degree burglary charge and another year-long sentence on the possession charge.

“The sentence should send a message to all criminals that this type of criminal activity will not be tolerated in Spartanburg County,” Barnette said.

Linder’s sentences will run consecutively and must serve 85 percent of the sentence before he is eligible for release, Barnette said.

Almost 200 year prison sentence ? Gee, I think they have gone too far and I don't think they are making the right decision for the young teen. They are just crazy.

Yeah, I know they want to give a warning to all criminals as an example of this young teen they are sending to prison - but, I still oppose to their idea. I think 200 year prison sentence is way too much.

I don't think it will help a young teen to learn his lesson - the question is : How could he move on after he learns his lesson ? He will NOT learn anything because, he will be stuck in prison for this very long time.

The court system seems unfair and it is not justice the way it should. It's extreme like Banjo said.
 
and I dont think the criminal will last up to 200 years - impossible and such as what Banjo said, quite extreme.
 
If they give this teenager this kind of punishment, but they give those other teenagers (the ones who lured a victim to their apartment to beat the crap out of her) a lighter harmless sentence... then I know that there's a serious problem in our justice system. :roll:
 
Giving long sentences for lighter crimes and giving lighter sentences for serious crimes doesn't make sense. *smh*
 
Whoa! :eek: I can't believe a teen received a 200-year prison sentence,
what up to him?! You'd better not doing breaking the law for lighter
crime. :D
 
maybe it's cuz of the "three strikes and you're out" law? :dunno:
 
Armed robbery is extreme. I believe that a 200-year sentence is ridiculous (not many manage to live half as long and be a threat to society). This will be appealled because, surely, the 19-year old will have all the time in the world.

Linder broke into four Spartanburg-area homes. The burglaries occurred during the day while the homeowners were at work and the stolen items included jewelry, guns and electronic equipment and other valuables.

He also committed two armed robberies in July 2007. The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Department was conducting surveillance on convenience stores in Spartanburg County because of prior armed robberies being committed.

A repeat offender who now becomes a violent repeat offender. This sounds like Jena, Louisiana (same situation: repeat offender turns into a violent repeat offender). I wonder if 10,000 people will, once again, come to the defense of a violent, habitual criminal.
 
*shakes my head* Yeah, It's ironic how they put a severity of stricter charges for a benign crime but yet, a lighter charge for a hefty crime. It's twisted.

As for having a 200 years sentence to be in prison - IMO, I think it is just crazy as it is. There is no way anyone could live up to 200 years. I'm not saying that the criminal should get away with it. They shouldn't get away with it but if you really look at how the justice system has been, it is definitely out of context.
 
Well thats what you would get when breaking laws like that whether u think its fair or unfair so...that's his problem. He should've thought of that before pulling a stunt like that anyway.
 
Remember this is ARMED robbery. And we dont know his past history, and its possible he may have committed more crimes during his early teen...

Yeah, I agree with some of you ---

The question is : Are they going to do the same thing to young children ( not to mention " teens " ) ? :hmm: I am very concerned about this one. I've seen some laws are very harsh on small young ones such as forbidden to hug a teacher in class - remember ? Not just only that, but a toy gun, too... and other few things. Ridiculous....
 
yup.. School Administrators has lost their common senses.. Now they put you in jail for simple stuff like hugging, bring toy gun, bring peanut better sandwish, etc..

I missed these old day..
