Two men wielding a machete and a cleaver hacked a man believed to be a soldier to death on a busy London street Wednesday while yelling "Allahu Akbar," in an attack that was caught on video and left the nation shocked and horrified.

The victim, who some reports said may have been a soldier, was killed at the scene, and the attackers waited at the scene until police arrived and shot both. One attacker, his hands soaked in blood and still holding a machete, delivered an angry jihadist screed as stunned passersby watched, the dead man lying on the street, in the southeast London neighborhood of Woolwich.

"We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you. The only reason we have done this is because Muslims are dying every day," he said in a video clip that was shown on the ITV website. "This British soldier is an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.

"I apologize that women have had to witness this today, but in our land our women have to see the same," the killer continued. "You people will never be safe. Remove your government, they don't care about you."

Witnesses said the attackers shouted "Allahu Akbar," Arabic for "God is Great," during the bloody rampage, according to the BBC.

Police said two attackers were shot by authorities and taken to separate London hospitals to be treated for their injuries. Live television images of the scene showed a trail of blood on the pavement, cordoned-off streets and crime scene investigators marking the scene as witnesses recounted the harrowing attack.

"These two guys were crazed. They were just animals," one witness, identified as James, told LBC radio. "They dragged him from the pavement and dumped his body in the middle of the road and left his body there."

British Prime Minister David Cameron, who cut short a visit to Paris, condemned the killing as "truly shocking," and said there are "strong indications" that the attack was terror-related. He asked Home Secretary Theresa May to call an urgent meeting of the government's emergency committee.

"Britain has suffered terrorist attacks before, terrorist attacks from the IRA, terrorist attacks from Islamic extremists," Cameron said. "We have suffered these attacks before and we have always beaten them back."

Both French President Francois Hollande and MP Nick Raynsford told the BBC the dead man had been a soldier.

Scotland Yard said officers responded to reports of the assault, which took place just a few blocks from a the Royal Artillery Barracks. The barracks -- which house a number of the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery and independent companies of the Grenadier and Coldstream Guards -- were the site of shooting events during the 2012 London Olympics.

The Muslim Council of Britain condemned the attack.

"This is a truly barbaric act that has no basis in Islam and we condemn this unreservedly," the group said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with the victim and his family. We understand the victim is a serving member of the Armed Forces."

Oh Freak Crazy in London...

I can't imagine actually witnessing this scene. *Shudders*

Update:

"The two arrests, of a man and a woman -- both 29 -- on suspicion of conspiracy to murder, raises the possibility that the gruesome attack was not a so-called 'lone wolf' killing as once thought."

Let's remember the victim:

The British soldier slain in a gruesome cleaver attack in London was a well-liked infantryman and machine gunner who served in Afghanistan and Cyprus, and then became a military recruiter and ceremonial drummer outside the Royal Palaces, the military said Thursday.

Drummer Lee Rigby, 25, was part of the Regimental Recruiting Team in London, and as a machine gunner, he was part of the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

The Fusiliers, an infantry group, are known for the hackle, or feather plume, in their military headdress.

Rigby had a 2-year-old son, Jack, the UK Ministry of Defense said.

Fellow soldiers described him as having an engaging personality. He joined the army in 2006 and acquired the nickname "Riggers" in his platoon.

"He was a real character within the Second Fusiliers," Lt. Col. Jim Taylor, commanding officer of the 2nd Fusiliers, said in a statement. "Larger than life, he was at the heart of our Corps of Drums. An experienced and talented side drummer and machine gunner, he was a true warrior and served with distinction in Afghanistan, Germany and Cyprus."

Rigby also loved soccer's Manchester United, soldiers said.

"He was one of the Battalion's great characters, always smiling and always ready to brighten the mood with his fellow Fusiliers," Warrant Officer Ned Miller of the 2nd Fusiliers said in a statement. "He was easily identified whilst on parade by the huge smile on his face and how proud he was to be a member of the Drums. He would always stop for a chat just to tell me Manchester United would win the league again."

Rigby was born in Crumpsall, Manchester.

After joining the army, his first post was in Cyprus as a machine gunner in Dhekelia, the military said.

In 2008, he was assigned to Hounslow, West London, and became "an integral member of the Corps of Drums throughout the Battalion's time on public duties, the highlight of which was being a part of the Household Division's Beating the Retreat--a real honour for a line infantry Corps of Drums," the ministry said.

In 2009, he deployed on operations "for the first time," sent to Afghanistan's Helmand province, where he was a member of a fire support group at Patrol Base Woqab.

He then returned to the UK and completed a second tour of public duties. Later, he followed the battalion to Celle, Germany.

In 2011, he became a recruiter at the Regimental Headquarters in the Tower of London.

Rigby "was a cheeky and humorous man, always there with a joke to brighten the mood; he was an extremely popular member of the Fire Support Group," said Capt. Alan Williamson, who was Rigby's platoon commander from 2010 to 2011....

Firearm is much quicker, at least 1,800 FPS, too bad that terrorist is taking advantage of gun ban laws. See? They don't even need to make a bomb to make a killing in strictly gun ban state. Hence reason why there is bomb going on here cause they know they can't just fight with knife.

At least, we know terrorist can't win!

and it took armed police about 30 minutes to respond....

i just read most sickning thing on fb transcript of local islamic radio program liking it to monty python...sad world

Wirelessly posted

Shame that it took 30 minutes for armed officers to show up. Made me think what protical they had to follow to obtain guns, before arriving to the scene.
