Starbucks sued for refusing to Serve the Deaf

no problem!

I will obviously have a similar experience as Steinhauer if I were to be a de facto group leader to Georgia for the weekend but I wouldn't complain like that. I would blame myself for not being an effective, resourceful host, not the city. I've enjoyed many cities I've visited to in several countries and all over USA. Every city has its own culture and niche.

It's all about how does one perceives it and how one copes with it.

Yes, at earlier, I had bad experience with DC but became more useful in few months later.

I made very stupid decision to brought my new LED monitor from Best Buy to Gally - I walked from subway station to Gally during afternoon and I know anyone will rob me to take LED monitor away. I was feel like - I should use taxi to transport me with expensive electronic to Gally, not walk on rough street.

I arrived safely and no one took my stuff away.

on that side note.... off to NYC with my brother! :cool2:

gonna stave off rude stupid drivers and employees

This thread reminds me of going to these coffee shops while I was in the USA three years ago. Lucky, these employees were so kind, nothing such like this, but this situation has been offending for Alan and other deafies. Starbucks are the most well known location for deaf meets.

Jiro, are you saying that the DPHH has closed down?

I wasn't the host. That was the thing. I had actually been invited to go, and when we arrived, they elected me "leader". I had been under the impression that plans had been made in advance. It was thrown at me - and yes, we found a place to stay on Broadway thanks to some quick and innovative thinking on my part (the Novotel). There were 18 people total in the group including myself. We got a room that had two king size beds and took shifts. :giggle: even the nasty roach hotels refused to serve our group, and I am glad they did - the Novotel was sweeeeeeet!!! http://www.novotel.com/gb/hotel-0753-novotel-new-york-times-square/index.shtml

You can make all the assumptions you want about me personally, but i should perhaps remind you that you do not know me personally. It is immature and conceited to make assumptions on a person's character whom you have never met.

And, I have close family that have lived in NYC their entire lives, some are from Brooklyn, others are from Manhattan. One of my cousins from NYC just graduated from West Point. he is moving here to Georgia to get Ranger training before he gets deployed - so .. we will have a chance to hang out a little bit before deployment.

This is also another cousin of mine from NYC - you probably know who the other guy is.

but you took responsibility and accepted it. therefore.... if anything happens.... it's your responsibility. I wouldn't blame the city or rude employees. I take it as my responsibility to handle a problem. The city is what it is with its own culture and niche and it would be my fault not to be able to fit in.

huh? where have I made an assumption about you?

cool. then you should have contacted them for advice.

I didn't have much time to prepare for it either but I did the best I can in short time. I'm the go-to guy for south-west NYC but the AD party was on mid-east side which was a foreign land for me so I asked a couple of locals who know that specific area very well.

Ok, where exactly have I NOT taken responsibility? And yes, I can blame rude people when they are being ... rude. I can blame a city for being polluted. I can have a personal opinion :ty:

I did contact them for advice - An Uncle and Aunt were out of town on a cruise - A cousin was a NYC attorney and had a pressing court case and was not available - other cousin was deployed overseas and another cousin told me about the Novotel. Assuming I had not contacted them for advice is yet another assumption.

where did I say you didn't?

FYI - just letting you know that a lot has changed since then.

my apology then.

I have been to NYC since then. I have also been to DC (about a month and a half ago, I stayed with friends in Fairfax). After having lived in a rural/suburb area with lots of foliage, trees, and wildlife ... the pollution up there really took its toll on me.

I got pink eye within the first few hours I was there. I then got a severe headache, runny nose, sore throat etc. And you were right, when I lived in DC, I was constantly feeling sluggish and slow.

I just like wide and open places and I feel anxious in large crowds of people. (I am going to be posting up a thread soon about a forgotten city in America you may find interesting - watch for it - may take me a couple hours - it has everything to do with discrimination too).

ah yea I gotcha. maybe it's why these people are always angry and impatient? wondering when will they turn into zombies :eek3:

A Forgotten City? *waiting anxiously* I wonder what is it...

Jiro *ahem*

yea I'm getting to it. I just got home from city again

I had a BBQ few hours ago with my bro and my friend's family and then I was hungry again so I rode to city again for Chinatown as usual... chicken bun and bubble tea.

DPHH has been disbanded yes. Now DNO replaced it - Deaf Night Out. Alex and his friend are the hosts. They haven't hosted it for a while... maybe next year - hopefully.

You will probably not survive in China - they have worst pollution, even much worse than LA and Houston.

My interpreter went to Shanghai to pick up the adopted child and the pollution was terrible - she got black stuff from her nose on kleenex tissue, have difficult to breath, sore throat and other issues.

The government worked hard to find a solution for pollution, however some companies don't agree with government's plan.

The forgotten city had a solution ... will post soon. (hint - even though Atlanta is dirty, it isn't as dirty because of all the trees).

How many times does this occur per year? It is a shame that DPHH has been disbanded. Disappointing for the people who complained, they should just enjoy it!

no idea. DNO hasn't been hosted for a couple years. or since last year? I don't remember.

Aren't you at least curious as to what started it? None of us have the facts, we did not see exactly what happened.
I don't know for a fact but the article mentioned:

He says Starbucks refused to serve his group, telling them in writing that Starbucks doesn't serve deaf people.

That means they will not serve me as well when I go there.

BTW, I understand that many deaf people meet at Starbucks for socializing (I never get involved with it cuz I am not interested) but at least they have to buy something every 30 mins or so. If they come to that place just for socializing without buying something, Starbucks has a right to kick them out. Suppose if only 5 out of 20 people order a coffee or drink, then what?
