"The presence of a weapon in our stores is unsettling and upsetting for many of our customers."

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
If you like going to Starbucks and usually carry a gun, the coffee chain is now asking you leave it at home or in the car.

The coffee chain said guns are no longer welcome in its cafes.

Starbucks knows it can't ban people from bringing firearms into its cafes and said it will continue serving people who do bring them in, but it's asking you to honor its request.

Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz released a letter, saying more people have been bringing guns into Starbucks over the last six months, bringing confusion and dismay among some patrons and employees.

Starbucks' longstanding policy had been to obey local gun laws, including "open carry" regulations that allow people to bring guns into stores but that policy frustrated US gun-control advocates especially after recent mass shootings. Schultz says he knows some people will oppose, but said he's not worried about losing customers.

In the letter, Schultz stated, "For those who oppose "open carry," we believe the legislative and policy-making process is the proper arena for this debate, not our stores. For those who champion "open carry," please respect that Starbucks stores are places where everyone should feel relaxed and comfortable. The presence of a weapon in our stores is unsettling and upsetting for many of our customers."

This request does not apply to authorized law enforcement personnel.

Starbucks plans to buy ad space in major national newspapers Thursday, to run an open letter from the CEO explaining the decision.

That why I support CCW.

No one know if you have gun or not.

I don't need to know if anyone carry gun or not.

In today's mail we got an offer for free Starbucks product if we come by. Good timing. ;)

I don't drink starbuck. it's repugnant. my own coffee is better :cool2:

Wow attacking law abiding citizens and did nothing against crooks?

Criminals once again got away! Sad!

I think the only time I've bought anything a a Starbucks was gift items for other people. If we use this mail offer it will be a first. I rarely turn down a freebie.

yeah i got an empty bag of starbucks that offer a free coffee cup if i give the empty bag to them. I got one today!

At least, they don't outlaw CCW.

Not surprised about customers got scared by guys carry AR-15 on back or pistol in holsters.

If I have to carry the gun so I prefer CCW because I don't want deal with overreaction and phobia customers who call police on me. I don't need anyone to know if I carry guns.

I have no problem with concealing gun (CCW). When criminals knows that CCW is allowed, and not many showing guns gets them nervous about committing their stupid crime.

We can not prevent by 100%, being vigilant is the key on deter these stupid criminals.

DHB jumped to conclusion as usual.

You are right that CCW has nothing to do with it.

Maybe because I live in Texas, I personally someone freaking out if someone has a gun in a holster in a coffee place is a bit over extreme. I can understand people's feelings about all of this. I really can. However, if someone that didn't carried concealed handgun and someone started shooting up the place...I would want them have it at the same time.

Very few states have open carry laws, anyways. Most require permits to even allow open carry.

I've no problem with CCW. Starbucks is being illogical and irrational with fear.

Maybe I missed something but I don't know why Starbucks is making a fuss about Open Carry cuz, if I recall correctly, there are currently only 9 States with OCW......

Maybe it's because the story here in Florida a while back where a lady had a gun in her purse, dropped it, it discharged and shot her friend in the leg. :giggle: ( insert sarcasm ) Talk about god awful luck though! They made a big fuss about it here. :dunno: Now they're scared about tons of randomly discharging weapons in their stores... :P

I don't open carry personally. I don't like the attention. I do think it's funny when people get scared of it though. Really all it does is break their little false idea of safety. No one knows who is carrying what. I assume anyone could be armed.

I think you are misunderstood - Starbucks made only issue that cover on open carry, not CCW.

Some of the members don't understand that Starbucks makes the policy to respect its customers who don't feel comfortable with OCW. Customers always come first. In other words, if it doesn't bother customers, Starbucks wouldn't make the policy. The members blame Starbucks while they should blame customers for complaining. DUH!

Yes, that's correct - blame on customers, not Starbucks.

Starbucks have to balance the customers and they don't want lose the business if customers are uncomfortable with OC (open carry). That's very unfortunately and some gun owners probably have no respect or intimidation - that what I don't know about customer's situation. I need more detail.
