<long>
I saw a bit of an interview of her in the news....my thought is - sometimes people can be very light-skinned and appear "white" or very "mixed" when they actually DO have some or a lot of African-American heritage somewhere <and the parents may have hid it, or really didn't know anything about the their own ancestors background>.....so...this may account for some her features and her sense of how she feels about herself....but it seems also she is...wishing for something, missing something....in the small part of the interview I saw, she only talked about how -she- feels and how she -feels - "black" and it seems like, self-centered and -not genuine. The two things that really bother me about it are - there is a feel of not so much outright dishonesty, but - not disconnect from herself all around, which then seems to lead into my next concern, which is - given that alleged photo of herself as a young child in which she appears VERY "white" the way race is perceived in the U.S. - she has been able to "pass" - which means she has privilege. She has white privilege. Which she didn't acknowledge in the interview. And white privilege is so critical to be aware of when you're talking about racism - and for sure when you're leading an organization designed to empower people and combat the effects of privilege in a society based on a social construct or race - how can she lead the NAACP?
So I agree with her stepping away and I think someone who has experienced what it means - culturally, socially in the U.S. - to be perceived as African-American - to be treated most often as black in a country based on racial disparities - should be leading the NAACP.
