Hello, my name is Sara and I am a junior computer science major at the University of Delaware. I'm working on a research project and I'm wondering if anyone who is deaf/hearing impaired would be willing to provide me with a little bit of information.

I'm wondering if you experience current spell checkers (such as those in Microsoft word) as being sufficient. Are you usually able to find the correct spellings you were looking for? Do you think the spell checker should be altered in some way as to better serve you?

Any input on the matter would be GREATLY appreciated! Either just pick an option in the poll, post anything you'd like to say or you can email me if you'd like your response to be more anonymous. I hope that I haven't offended anyone by asking as that was not my intention...

Thanks so much!

I'm hearing also. Spell checkers fine for me... WHEN I choose to use them! LOLOL

I don't usually type anything important enough that I have to throw on a spell checker and proofread. My spelling is usually not so bad, anyway. My grammar and sentence structure, however, leave a LOT to be desired! lol But, pfft! Like I said, the things I type aren't worth me fussing over, so I just make sure I'm understood and go on my merry way! :)

Thanks everyone for the input. Is there anyone who is actually Deaf or hearing impaired who would like to comment?

im deaf -- i dont use the spell checker -- i just read what i have to say and made editions when necessary

I am :deaf: . I dont use spell checker. If I dont know how to spell, I alway look up at dictionary book.

This is great everyone, thank you so much. For those of you who choose not to use spell checkers, is there a specific reason why you don't use them? Is it just the habit of using a dictionary or is there some reason relating to the actual spell checker?

i rarely use dictionary too :dunno:

I'm deaf here and I do use the spell checker when I send email out but when I am in a forum, I haven't seen any spell checkers being add, it doesn't bother me if there isn't one here, I can always look up in the dictionary....

I forgot to add one more thing, when I spell a word wrong even tho it may be close to it, it still will not give you the correct word, so I would say it not quite as good as you can get the correct word out of the dictionary...

We do need a spell checker. But alex wont load it
Where did I say anything about not adding a spell checker to AD?

A spell checker will eventually be added to AD, I can't just magically make it happen all of a sudden.

I thought that discussion was carried in another thread! ;)

Just to remind the others who may be illiterate.. This spellchecker thread is about using word processors' spell checkers, nothing to do with getting AD a spellchecker option!

:werd: I understand many of the members just fine. :thumb:

Seeing as there don't seem to be any major problems or concerns with spell checkers in general, are there any kinds of improvments anyone would suggest to make a spell checker more useful?

I realize that people probably don't think about this kind of thing on a daily basis so I thank you all for putting up with my questioning...
