WASHINGTON (April 16) - Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean, who has accused congressional Republicans of "grandstanding" in the Terri Schiavo case, said his party will use it against the Republicans in coming elections.

"This is going to be an issue in 2006, and its going to be an issue in 2008 because we're going to have an ad with a picture of (House Majority Leader) Tom DeLay saying, 'Do you want this guy to decide whether you die or not? Or is that going to be up to your loved ones?"' Dean said in West Hollywood, California.

Dean, answering questions at an Access Now for Gay and Lesbian Equality event on Friday, went on to say: "The issue is: Are we going to live in a theocracy where the highest powers tell us what to do? Or are we going to be allowed to consult our own high powers when we make very difficult decisions?"'

Schiavo, 41, died March 31 at a Florida hospice, almost two weeks after her feeding tube was removed by court order - ending a bitter legal battle between her husband, Michael, and her parents, Bob and Mary Schindler.

As Schiavo faded, congressional leaders called lawmakers back from Easter recess to pass a bill that would allow federal courts to review the decisions of state judges who turned down her parents' efforts to resume her feeding. Federal judges all the way to the Supreme Court held up those decisions.

Republican National Committee spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt said Dean, a physician who practiced internal medicine, was the one politicizing the issue.

"It's disturbing that Howard Dean would plot to use the life of Terri Schiavo for political gain," Schmitt said Saturday. "This demonstrates a troubling lack of sensitivity and one would hope that Democrat leaders in Congress would reject such a strategy.

"The American people expect their leaders to provide solutions and principled leadership rather than overt partisan politicking."

Karen Finney, Democratic National Committee spokeswoman, defended Dean's comments, saying they were not a reflection of him trying to politicize the issue, but rather he was speaking to "Republican intrusiveness into people's lives."

"This is another example of a Republican party that is overreaching," she said. "Tom Delay and his cronies want to intrude in personal family matters. Democrats believe that individuals and their families should be trusted to make these very personal decisions, not Tom DeLay and not the government.

I totally agree. I have said this before Republicans always get in everyone's business and letting people die, or take their rights away. :nono:

*sigh* why cant they leave the family alone to moan for her daughter. This issue is over and nothing we can do about those right now. We cant bring her back to alive. IT should be up to family and doctor only as the doctors make oath to keep business between doctor and patient (immediate families only).

Right, But there will be more people like Terri in the nearest future, Do you want that to happen again, Having the government run your life, Deciding when you should live or die? Or having to pull a feeding tube without a living will since they did that to Terri without a living will. A new bill should be introduced, and passed by the Congress and becomes the law. Something needed to be done to avoid to end someone else's life. The American people expect their leaders to provide solutions,That's the major point. Remember how President Bush used the Sept. 11th on his politicly gain? And guess what? He won didn't he? Even through he didn't respect Sept. 11th those who have died as result as being heros and innocents that cost their lives that day too. But, He won because they think he would end the terrorists. ;)

Boy, I've noticed that more and more people are bringing politics into everything that happen nowadays. *shakes head in shame* :(

Yep, That's how they gain their votes from voters, Republicans and Democratic looks through past their flaws and use it against each other in the next election day. Just like people haven't forgotten about Clinton's affair with Monica, And made the Democratic party looking bad and went and voted for Republican. They used that game in every election, just to get votes.

Yes, I´m agree that it´s none of Government business. They should not run their people´s lives. :(

I second that, I rather the governement stay out of people's business and their lives too cause they're not living in it, the American people are!!... :smash:

I don't like the governement poke nosy into their business. The government should leave them alone.

"Republican intrusiveness into people's lives."
Definitely. I am very glad that the public now see these GOPs' real faces.

What pissed me off is that GOPs tried to politicize Schiavo's tragedy to exploit the political gains.... but apparently that reality backfires upon them. It also make me glad that reality cannot be harness by these Godless party, GOP/Religious Right.

I'm just glad that I'm not either a Republican nor a democrat but a liberal indeed.

I happen to agree with you on this, Cheri.... to a point.

Something does need to be done. I feel very strongly that decisions like this should be made by families and doctors. The government should have no say in what happens to me when I'm nearing the end of my life. Having said that, I also think there needs to be some type of law past that will push people to think more about their end of life decisions, and put those decisions in writing. If Terri Schiavo had had a living will, the case would have never happened.

sort of gov't part of gov't for ???

*ahem* Isn't good idea being gov't controlling over peoples' lives.. Just let be as leave them alone their decision not gov't being decison.

I believe bringing up the past about Terri would be disrespectful to the family and even her husband, just to use this against the republicans...even Bush and the republican showed a video of the 9/11th attack with the death of victims before his running for the 2nd term...was that respectful? I doubt it, and I'm sure alot of you doubt it, as well.

Bringing up stuff like this won't change the past. what's done is done and the democrats should get over it and just do whatever to interest the public to get their votes. the same goes for the republicans, also.

I want to correct that. According to this article, Dean isn't planning to politicize Schiavo's tragedy. That pathetic GOP tried to spin Dean's words to save their faces. Dean is planning to politicize what Tom DeLay was saying or what he was doing (intervention). Dean didn't say anything about Schiavo, GOP did.

No one is in their right brain but Religious Right want to have government to intervene in Americans' family matters. That's what Dean was trying to say or rather, framing.

I am sorry I disagree with you, Bringing up the past wouldn't change the past? It can and it will change if they change the law and have people must to have a living will. Remember what happen in Texas that a baby was off support without the mother's permission the government ran her life, decide when the baby should die. That so disgusted. We are losing our freedom to do what we want without breaking the law, They are taking that freedom away from us, the right to live, the right to make our own choices when it comes to live or die. Since when is the Government allowing to play God? If you let them forget about the past, It's not gotta get better it's gotta get worst. :)

Then I guess USA is trying to be more like China, which has a dicatorship there and perhas USA is trying to have a dictoarship also but still...everything's about that is fucked up because there are more republicans controlling the country than the democrats. that seems to be quite the problem there.

:gpost: I believe that to be true. I also believe (and, I also hope) that the Schiavo case comes back to bite DeLay on his slimey arse!

Well said there Cheri,

If people out there are simply ignoring this situation by saying it's best to leave in the past, let it go and move on, now tell me what makes you think that this won't happen again? This has started way back before Terri Schiavo's issue came up where the government walked into your lives by making a decision based on your life whether you should live or die.....Likewise what happening with the gay marriage and the others things that are out there as well, how the government is taking our right to live, our right to do whatever we want in our lives without breaking any laws, but then again some laws have flaws in them, how can we live our lives without letting the government takes control of the things we do and the decision we make in our lives everyday....

When will we ever have the freedom to do anything we want in our lives simple because we're the ONES living it not the government, I personally think that some laws DO needs to be changed and to keep their noses out of other people's lives as much as possible afterall we're living in America where our personal rights should be respected as well as for the well being and safety for all Americans when it comes to freedom, having this without the courts of the U.S. government overstepping our own personal freedom.....

Has anyone remember the case of the little Cuban boy that was found in the ocean in Florida ( I think I got that right unless I might have made a few errors ) and when the Uncle wanted his nephew to live with him in America, but his father who lives in Cuba wanted his son to return home, that's when the American government busted into their lives and home by sending government agents who seized the young boy and sent him back to his father in Cuba, what happened to the boy's right to freedom.....a life he could have had better than what it is in Cuba? He did have family members living here in America and their freedom to keep the boy here in America was overturned despite his mother's wishes to bring him here, sadly his mother died trying to get to America and her own voice, her own pursuit of freedom for her son and herself was never realized or take place..... :(

that cuban kid was one of the illegal aliens trying to get across the boarder to America, but of course...he's only a kid..perhas was about 6 years old and there was a huge war over this issue because he's a poor kid whose mother was killed in the seas, and cuba lacks freedom and justice there, and others say that he should be sent back because according to the law, a person has to become an American citizen before living 7 years in America, and Bill Clinton, before his ending term, was about to give the kid a chance to be an American citizen, but that's totally unfair and against the law. You must take a test and understand the history of America in order to become an citizen, but Clinton was being too easy on that kid and was about to let him be an citizen so he wouldn't have to go back to Cuba. The point is, he was born cuban, and always will be...unless he's old enough (I believe you must be at least 18 years old to take the test to become an citizen) and of course, it's true that he has relatives in America, but they aren't on his father's side...and both his mother and father weren't american citizens either. His father wanted him to stay with him, but his relatives keep trying to keep him to stay in America, and make a pack of lies like his father is a child abuser and even try to forced the kid say that he wants to stay in America when they made a tape and mailed it to him. He's only 6 years old and doesn't really even know what was going on around him! it's like America and Cuba were pulling him apart for their demands and shit...however, the congress decide that he is 100% cuban and doesn't really have any legal rights to stay in the country since he was an illegal alien, no matter what age the person may be, he or she still has to be sent back to the country where they were from. Right now he is still with his father and is about 10 or 11 years old, I think. He proably understands why all of this crap was happening around him years ago already.

Life ain't fair. sorry.
