They just showed the news in the Welcome Screen that they had a footage of Saddam possibly alive..that footage was supposed to have been filmed a week ago the day the statue fell. Do you think he's alive or that's one of his impersonators??

DOHA, Qatar (April 18) - Saddam Hussein resurfaced Friday in image and in voice, waving to enthusiastic crowds on a video reportedly shot as American forces overran Baghdad and addressing his people in a tape recording that crackled with quiet defiance.

The twin electronic appearances deepened the mystery surrounding the fate of the elusive Iraqi president, who was believed to be either dead, in hiding or on the run.

The recordings were broadcast by Abu Dhabi television, which said it was told both were made April 9. That was two days after a U.S. bombing aimed at Saddam - and the very day a towering bronze statue of him tumbled down in what instantly became an iconic image of the war.

``Your leadership is not shaken,'' Saddam assured Iraqis in the speech. ``Not now, not in the future, just as it has always been.''

Abu Dhabi TV refused to say where it obtained the tapes, and U.S. Central Command in Doha said it was studying them. Saddam has long been suspected of deploying doubles to dupe potential assassins.

The date, too, was uncertain; the video bore no visible time stamp, and U.S. officials have suggested that Saddam had prerecorded material to air during the war.

``We don't know if he's dead or alive,'' said Claire Buchan, a White House spokeswoman. Two senior administration officials cast doubt on the authenticity of Abu Dhabi TV's exclusive.

The United States was still searching for Saddam inside Iraq, especially in Baghdad and his hometown of Tikrit. Resolving his fate - by capture or killing - would be a major step for American forces.

``If he is still alive, it's a matter of days,'' said Ensign David Luckett, a Central Command spokesman. ``He is no longer in power, and that is quite obvious in the country of Iraq as the Iraqi people celebrate their freedom.''

In the footage, shot from a distance, Saddam - in black beret and olive uniform, with a thick golden chain around his neck - waded through the crowd. ``With our blood and souls we redeem you, oh Saddam,'' some cheered.

Hoisted by his guards, Saddam ascended the hood of a car and appeared pleased, exhausted and a bit embarrassed by the adulation. As he waved, some thrust AK-47 assault rifles into the air.

The president's younger son, Qusai, stood at his side. Though nothing indicated definitively when the pictures were shot, haze visible in the background could have been dust - or smoke from U.S. bombardments.

Abu Dhabi TV asserted that the pictures, taken on a street in the tree-lined Azamiyah neighborhood of Baghdad, ``showed that there were parts of Baghdad that hadn't fallen at that day.''

Azamiyah, hit hard by U.S. bombardment, is considered a stronghold of Saddam's supporters. On April 11, it was the site of a firefight between Iraqis holed up in a mosque and U.S. Marines hunting for leaders of Saddam's regime.

Abu Dhabi TV's correspondent, Jaber Obeid, said the person who handed the videotape to the network assured them it was shot in Azamiyah on April 9.

``We always suspected, because of the many sightings of Saddam Hussein, that somebody - somehow, somewhere - would shoot a picture of him, would shoot a video,'' anchor Jasim al-Azz Azzawi told CNN. ``We went out of our way to make sure that that tape would fall into our hands.''

Saddam's speech, delivered in Arabic in an unknown location, was more subdued than the raucous video appearance. He spoke quietly and deliberately, and could be heard shuffling pages.

``Conquered people are the ones who eventually triumph over invaders,'' he said. ``We insist on attaining this honor of defending our home and our principles until the end.''

He added: ``He whose faith and heart is shaken ... should remember, and everyone should remind everybody else, that hard times need patience until they come to an end.''

In late March, during the first days of the war, Saddam appeared several times on Iraqi state television, first looking tired and puffy-eyed and, later, stronger as he promised to defeat the American invasion.

On April 7, a man resembling Saddam was shown on Iraqi TV in the streets of Baghdad being greeted by Iraqis. Later that day, U.S. forces bombed the upscale al-Mansour neighborhood after receiving a tip that Saddam had entered a building there.

Iraq's ambassador to Belgrade, who was loyal to Saddam, said he was confident the leader was killed in the coalition bombing of Baghdad.

``I know his character,'' Sami Sadoun said Friday. ``The defense of Baghdad would not have collapsed so quickly if he was not dead.''
