question about nightmare..

What about just saying you are manic depressive? Not so much of a stigma maybe?

nope, that won't work either because using the older name manic-depressive may raise even more negative stereotypes. besides, for some reason, i don't like that term. when people hear the word "manic," they think of someone who's crazed. i'm more comfortable with the term "bipolar" because it accurately describes how my moods change from one pole to another and back.

I think "manic depressive" is just as stigmatized as "bipolar."

BERRY, HIDING YOUR EMOTIONS NEVER WORKS! Unless you are a person that wants to make it much worse later.

Okay, one more reply.

Wish I could agree with the never part. But I used to travel a lot, and I've seen times and places where showing your true feelings could get you killed.

I kind of like living, so sometimes I look real serious and figure I'll have fun another day.

True, sorry.

In NORMAL LIFE it is BAD to continually hide ones feelings. IT WILL HURT MORE IN THE LONG RUN.

well, not everyone knows the definition of bipolar. more people are familiar with the term manic-depressive (or manic-depression) because it's been around since the 1950s.

And sometimes in those situations people do get killed because they do show their emotions. And if they don't it's usually due to powerful dissociation. And then the emotions pop up later. In fact that is very much like PTSD. Many traumatic situations don't allow room to express emotion. And since you're not allowed to express the emotion in the moment, it gets stored in your psyche as a flashback and you end up reliving the trauma with full-fledged emotions.

Berry, are you sure you know the extent of trauma we're talking about here? I'm not sure if you do by the way you are talking about it.

excellent post, nika! bravo!

that's okay. this is something i'll have to figure out on my own. i might even talk to my therapist for his viewpoint when the time comes that i start looking for a job.

Maybe you can explain it detached from any sort of label. You don't have to call it anything.

Exactly. You are very eloquent. If it is significant trauma and you ignore it, you will relive it, and it will hurt more and more, until you finally burst.

i'm afraid that won't work either because if the symptoms i share with my boss don't have an explanation, he/she probably won't believe it's real. besides, anyone can say they're bipolar even when they're not.

i'm probably better off sharing my diagnosis after i'm hired and if i end up losing my job because of it, oh well. i guess that's life.

Yes exactly. In severe cases it leads to Dissociate Identity Disorder (formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder.) When the psyche has traumatic material it can't handle, it compartmentalizes. Several alters can develop, one harboring the traumatic material, and the others keeping it out completely.

Trauma is powerful. It can really mess up the mind. It is really no laughing matter.

Yeah. Also what you could do is explain the symptoms and then give the label later on.

Exactly, it can KILL YOU from the inside out. Eat away at you.

i know someone who has PTSD and DID. she told me that in therapy she talks like a child when experiencing a flashback, but returns to "adult mode" when she comes out of them. she wasn't even aware of the fact that she was doing this until her therapist brought it to her attention. despite her knowing that this is what she does, it's something she can't help. every time she has a flashback, she returns to being that young child who was abused.

that's true. hopefully though they won't want to know exactly what i have after i tell them about my symptomatology.

I am dating someone with PTSD and DID. I am basically dating two people. When she is triggered, she goes into an alter that is highly irrational and in a LOT of pain. It just makes me feel so awful to know that she was hurt to the point she created an alter as a coping mechanism. <sad>

I doubt they will. Unless you're applying for a job in the mental health field.
