LAS VEGAS (March 17) - Charles A. McCoy Jr., suspected in two dozen sniper shootings that have terrorized motorists along Ohio highways, was arrested at a Las Vegas motel early Wednesday, authorities said.

''We got him in custody without incident,'' said Las Vegas police Lt. Christopher Van Cleef.

Van Cleef said McCoy, 28, was arrested at a motel near the Stardust casino Wednesday, two days after he was named as a suspect in the two dozen Columbus-area shootings.

Police were told of McCoy's whereabouts by a person who recognized him from media reports, Van Cleef said.

''He wasn't armed, but we haven't been in the motel room or his vehicle yet,'' Van Cleef said. He said police have impounded a 1999 Geo Metro that McCoy was driving.

Police had said McCoy had a history of mental illness and was believed to be armed, with ''suicidal or homicidal tendencies.'' His family refuted that description, calling McCoy troubled but peaceful...
''I knew it would happen without incident because he was a very passive individual,'' McCoy's sister Amy Walton said on NBC's ''Today'' show. ''This came as a great shock to our family When asked what she would say to her brother, Walton said, ''We can't wait to talk to you. Everything will be OK.''

FBI special agent Todd Palmer said McCoy is being processed in the agency's office and likely will be transferred to the U.S. attorney's office.

''They'll be in communication with the Columbus U.S. attorney,'' Palmer said.

The 24 shootings around several highways on the southern outskirts of Columbus pierced homes and a school, dented school buses, flattened tires and shattered windshields. They began in May.

I'm not surprised that he did those things. Usually, people with suicidal tendencies will do something wrong knowing that they're gonna die soon anyway. In other words, they have "nothing to lose".

Oh Goodie Goodie.....Now that keep us safe on the highway!!!.....

Thanks God for this awesome news!... ;)

Ohio Sniper Suspect Appears in Nevada Court

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - A 28-year-old man charged in connection with sniper-style shootings in Ohio that killed one person told a Nevada court on Friday he would not fight extradition and agreed to return home to face prosecution.

Charles McCoy Jr., wearing dark blue prison clothes with his hands cuffed to a chain around his waist, said little beyond responding "yes" to questions put to him by Justice of the Peace Douglas Smith.

He also chatted briefly with a local public defender before formally agreeing to be extradited.

Ohio officials said he would be returned to the state as soon as possible, perhaps later in the day or over the weekend.

McCoy was arrested without incident in the gaming capital on Wednesday after a gambler recognized him reading a newspaper with his wanted picture in it. He had disappeared from Ohio six days earlier, not long before police named him as a suspect.

There was nothing in Friday's court appearance to shed light on what investigators have learned from McCoy so far. He has been charged with felonious assault in one of 24 shooting incidents in the Columbus, Ohio, area. The attacks, which began last May, have involved buildings, including a school, as well as moving vehicles.

The single charge against McCoy involves a shot fired at a house. Investigators have said previously that the gun used in that case was also used in a number of other shootings, including one in November that killed a woman riding in a car.

No motive for the shootings, the last of which occurred in mid-February, has been determined. McCoy's family has said he suffers from mental illness.

The only person hit during the spree was 62-year-old Gail Knisley, who was killed on Nov. 25 while riding in a car on Interstate 270. The shootings recalled a three-week sniper spree in the fall of 2002 that killed 10 people in the Washington, D.C., area.

Ohio Sniper Suspect Agrees to Extradition
By KEN RITTER

LAS VEGAS (AP) - A man suspected of peppering Ohio highways with gunfire for 10 months, killing a passenger in one vehicle, agreed to extradition during a Nevada court appearance Friday.

Charles A. McCoy Jr. could be returned to Columbus, Ohio, as early as Friday night, said his Columbus attorney, Andrew Haney.

During the brief hearing, McCoy answered yes to a series of questions from Judge Douglas Smith, including whether he understood what was happening.

``You want to go back to Ohio?'' Smith asked. McCoy replied that he did and acknowledged that he had voluntarily signed a waiver of his right to have a hearing in Nevada to contest the Ohio warrant.

The judge ordered McCoy, 28, held without bail until his extradition, citing the nature of the charges in Ohio and the injuries involved.

The shootings around Interstate 270 and two nearby highways began May 10, but intensified in fall, terrorizing motorists and pocking some homes and a school with bullet holes. Gail Knisley, 62, was shot and killed Nov. 25 while a friend drove her to a doctor's appointment.

Investigators are looking into whether they have grounds to seek the death penalty for her slaying.

``You held a community at bay and terrorized the people of the state,'' Smith told McCoy.

McCoy is charged with assault in Ohio but faces additional charges when he returns, detective said.

Zachary Scott, a Franklin County sheriff's detective, attended the hearing and said he expected McCoy to be extradited ``within a day or so.''

McCoy was arrested Wednesday outside his room at a budget motel just off the Las Vegas Strip. Police said he had checked in about 24 hours earlier using his real name, and readily identified himself when he was apprehended.

McCoy was identified Monday as a suspect in the Ohio shootings when authorities there issued a bulletin saying he was believed to have mental health problems and a handgun.

Scott said police recovered a handgun during a search of McCoy's car and motel room.

I never admire the sniper rifles...you NEVER know if you are safe outside or not...and I dont believe they should be sold in public gun shops...only for the military and governemt itmes...but not into public, and if so, we are screwed with a bunch of innocent lives being lost everyday by snipers.
