KUWAIT CITY (AFP) - The one million citizens of Kuwait, where government financial assets have topped 166 billion dollars, are to receive a grant of 200 dinars (690 dollars) each, the government has announced.

"In accordance with directives by the emir, the cabinet decided to provide all Kuwaiti citizens with a grant of 200 dinars each," state minister for cabinet affairs Ismail al-Shatti said Sunday after the cabinet weekly meeting.

The two million foreign workers in the oil-rich emirate were not included.

The OPEC member posted a surplus in each of the past seven fiscal years, totalling more than 50 billion dollars. Kuwait is also headed for record revenues this year.

The government offered a similar grant in October 2004 and raised salaries of citizens by 170 dollars monthly last year. MPs in the outspoken parliament have been pressing for a new hike.

The Gulf Arab state provides a cradle-to-grave welfare system to its citizens who receive most public services at heavily subsidized prices and pay no income tax.

Some 92 percent of Kuwait's 300,000-strong workforce are employed in government jobs, with high wages and minimal work pressure.

If the Kuwaiti people are satisfied with that arrangement, that's their business. If they don't like it, they can complain. What else is there to say?

Yes but we are paying almost $75. a barrel now :hyper:

Yes and they are starting to max out pumping the oil out of the ground--they're getting it out fast as they can to "feed" the world demand and not more than that. The party won't last long. That $$ is nothing compared to what the royal families get--millions of $$. Also a large number of the natives don't work becuz there are not enough jobs available besides those taken by the imported laborers. So they get allowance from the gov't --don't know the average payment.

Hmm... this reminds me of when Bush tried to "buy us" with his $600 tax refund years ago.

Yeah I remember that, he mentions in a speech that people have problems paying for things like elec., gas, etc... Hell that money didn't last long for me and now-a-days everyone has problems paying for gas because its so damn high for gas, home, WTF Bush
