Officials: Three dead at Kansas City shopping center - CNN.com

(CNN) -- Three people died and at least two others were wounded Sunday in a shooting at a shopping mall in Kansas City, Missouri, a Fire Department official said.

In addition, a police officer was wounded in a nearby incident authorities believe is related, Kansas City Fire Department Battalion Chief Joe Vitale said. He added that the dead include the original shooter.

The dead and two or three others who were wounded were at Ward Parkway Shopping Center, about nine miles south of downtown Kansas City, Vitale said.

Janet Coleman said she saw "a young man with a sawed-off shotgun" in the parking lot being chased by police.

"I could just see a blunt-sized gun bigger than, like a regular .44," she said, adding that she gained her expertise in weapons from watching "a lot of crime TV."

Inside, clothing store manager Lissa Young said "several rounds of gunfire" were followed by two customers who ran into the store and said shots had been fired.

She said she immediately locked the doors and ordered the customers to the back of the store, where they waited until police gave them the all-clear.

Witness Queea Miller said the shootings took place in the parking lot.

"I was in my truck and the gunman was two cars over from me," she told CNN. She said she saw the gunman shoot in the direction of a Starbuck's coffee shop. "Then after he stopped, he re-loaded and started shooting again."

She said that, during the shootings, she and her 18-year-old daughter "lay our seats all the way back and I got to praying. You could hear the shots going off again."

Then police, their guns drawn, began "coming from everywhere," she said

Do u think there are more random shootings (shooting at strange people without being provoked) these days or are we getting too much from the media?

Man...another tragic shooting rampage, however, as far as to what details is known at this time, police were able to put an end to it quicker, otherwise, it's possible more victims could have fallen.

I tell ya, it's indeed getting  ....

Truly tradegy. We re not safe anywhere even in shopping mall sheesh. It goes show that no matter what how government to to clamp down on guns , bad people will find a way to obtain dangerous guns.

It s up to us to spread the loves and happiness around. Less bitterness among us , the better we will be off.

Nah. We need to be informed and updated as much we can to be aware of our surronding. If it happens in your hometown, you would be immediately be on alert and watch out for any shooter on the loose.

Remma MD sniper shooting? It took me a while to step outside and fill up my car at gas station.

Wow... the World gets worse... I can remember when I was teenager... we girls could walk to the park for dances every night... we were safe.... but the counselors at the park always told us to go home at 10 pm.. every night... so we girls walked back home....

NOwadays no one are safer during the day time... Wow...

What I mean was, compared to 20 years ago, r there more rampage shootings or does it feel that way cuz we get info so quickly due to living in the information age?

Ohh the sniper shootings...I was nervous at every gas station praying that I won't be the next victim. I wud get the pump in, start it, and go sit in my car while my tank is being filled up. Did that like in less a min and just hauled my ass out of the gas stations.

i would agree with comments

im sure mostly people and kids always must going home before 10pm or after 10pm

i do always going anywhere before night times but i told my mom let her know where i am going and im 25 years old i can go anywhere what i wanted it because my hometown have strict as crimes my mom told me about that and my mom must me get home before 7pm.

im sure this 3 people always must kept eyes for gunman and dont getting hurt again like VA or police would doing their jobs for murder search and lots of mores who did killed for 3 people.

I believe we re getting more violence in our era than it s 20 years ago because of lack of discplines. Remma when we were young, our parents could beat a shit out of us to keep us in check. But nowadays kids are being too pampered and given too much freedom. This lead to disrespect parents or defy the authorities. Not all shooters re like this but its one of my thinking why we re gettingmore shootings today than before.

I think it s no different whether we have more or quick info now than 20 yrs ago. In 20 yrs ago, people relied on radios or tv. I am sure they do get info quickly pretty much like today. Only different thing is that we , today, can easily relay or share the news quickly with friends, family, etc..

I hate to say this but if there was a bomb involved, I'd be thinking of Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz. In it, he wrote of a mall-related shooting and a thwarted bomb plan inside of a crowded mall.

Either everyone is competing for more kills or the world is ending soon... :Ohno:

Whoo hoo 20 kills. My highscore is now 50,000! *gunshot* oh crap.. they got me, hey why am I not respawning.. i still have 2 lives left.... oh no... its fading to black.... argh -burble-

i believe its being copy-cat thingy.. people think its cool that VA tech killed more than 30 ppl.. and they want to do the same thing to get attention.

i read somewhere that VA tech shooter.. himself is a lonely guy.. had no friends.. and even had imagery girlfriend. people believe he killed people because of isloation(sp?)

now a mall shooting.. a great copy cat.. remember those school shooting years ago.. they spread and kids copy-cat and shoot in schools. now it has come to a stop... till this VA tech guy started and now its spreading.. false bomb threat, killing spree threat, and now police is getting this serious catching prank calls, threats, etc.. even if you're joking.. you'll be SORRY and in jail..

^^ not to mention if you re writing something that depicts murders or any sadism actions, you may be thrown in jail.

Our society s getting worse and worse. Perhaps its time for us to look into religion to save us ?

Whatever may come it's already set in stone now that that guns are going to take a hard hit. It's possible that they will impliment a quite few new and ridiculous gun laws.

In my opinion, I believe that the shooters were tired of being bored to death, and they probably had nothing to do at home or they had a poor social in their hometown.

The old days, there were many good activities in games and sports back in the 1960's. Like SxyPorkie's example. Now, we have computers and fewer activities because there is no free to get in like watching the sports at high schools, perhaps too expensive things to buy for their own hobby, and where they want to go and have some fun but there are no free tickets or too tire to do their hobby after work in nowaday.

Ah, one more thing is do we need to pay to join a club? It is probably all about money problem that make their life unhappy. Ofc, we hate to pay more taxes and require to subtract our money for a social security from work. Ofc, social security is important...

The only thing that I do not understand that so many people are watching pro players on television, and those players make over 1 million dollars (for instance). Irony, the people are watching the pro sports, and they have little money in their bank. I don't get it.

Yes seem worse than before? :dunno: ... Sad that why gunperson have to shooting at an innocent people too?

or

are we getting too much from the media?
Well Yes and No..

We do need to know what happen in our surroundings...

People learning from Tv and Game to a violent attack. :(:(

What about depressing newspapers and TV news about murderers, robberies, and accidents? That would affect their mind being negative.

Yes, we are getting too much from the media. Where is happy news in the newspapers? Probably none.
