Officials: Middle school student stabbed 40 classmates with needle - Crimesider - CBS News

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - A middle school student in Puerto Rico stabbed at least 40 classmates with a hypodermic needle, health officials say.

All of the students who were stabbed are being tested for possible diseases and are being given preventive medicine.

Health Department spokeswoman Margartia Casalduc says the attack occurred Tuesday at a school in Arroyo, a southern coastal town. She says she does not know if the syringe contained anything or was contaminated.

Education Secretary Jesus Rivera Sanchez said in a statement that the female suspect has been suspended.

Officials said counselors were meeting Thursday with the parents of the stabbed students.

Never use that syringe in school but this story is no laugh matter!

Well it would be considered contaminated, and should be handled as such. Just because the needle started off as clean doesn't mean that some students weren't put at risk. A disease could have been transcommunicated from one stabbing victim to another. A medical history of ALL students involved will have to be looked up and all known medical tests will have to be run. If one of the students is HIV+/AIDS I would be concerned, very very very concerned. Of course, there are a whole plethora of other diseases that can be transmitted via a shared needle, but the one I mentioned seems to be the most known.

Also, where in the crap does a middle school kid come up with a hypodermic needle in Puerto Rico???

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.

The only thing I can think of is that the student had his own (is diabetic or uses for his own health reasons) or found it laying around nearby outside (from drug users).

There is some crazy person doing a similar thing in some of the upscale shopping malls in northern Virginia. This guy (his picture has been captured on security cameras) comes up behind young women, either in the store or on an escalator, and stabs them in the rear with a needle of some sort.

So far he hasn't been caught, but his picture has been widely circulated in the media, so I hope it's just a matter of time.

I would be concerned about the needle breaking off in the flesh requiring surgery to remove it. Also, is the the guy using a diff needle each time, or is he making off with the needle each time he stabs someone?

Also, if he's going through clothes - wouldn't the needle more than likely break if it were going through denim? I mean depending on what gauge needle he's got is going to depend on how that needle is going to behave in such stabbings.

Man, if these keeps up diabetics are going to have a hard time getting their needles for their insulin.

I think the local pharmacy requires you to have a prescription for the needles to obtain them so if a diabetic runs out of needles, he has to go to his doctor, get evaluated and then get a prescription for the needles. The pharmacy calls the doctor to verify it before they give the customer their needles.

I'm not sure what the laws are regarding needles for insulin dependent diabetics.

What a sick world.. Whoever stabs others with a needle, due to the unknown transmitted diseases should be tried for death penalty.

I didn't need a prescription for syringes and insulin for my late dog's diabetes. That was in Michigan. I don't know about the other states.

If it's for animal use - it might be different. Who knows?

I went to a supermarket for those and I wasn't asked who these were for. When my dog died, I gave what was left to a diabetic friend who could use them.

Here's a list of the laws for syringes in various jurisdictions: Prescription Laws

This kid is sick and wrong. I remember accidentally getting a nurse stabbed with a needle that had been in me. The doctors had wanted to do a bunch of blood tests on me, and I was very afraid of needles.

Thanks for the link.

It only says the kid was suspended, but hopefully she was also arrested or institutionalized. She obviously needs intensive mental evaluation.

39 students possible get some kind of disease. One is lucky because that person is first who got stabbed.
