Try using sea foam ... its a carb cleaner I used to use in my bike and tried it once in the mower when it got hard to start ... after a tank of gas with sea foam it started first turn over ever since ... can get it at walmart or auto stores for about $10 a can.

Seafoam is awesome stuff, yes... I can get the large can at the farm supply store here for $7

Well got this rider home...it is one heavy SOB !!!!!
Picked it up, dropped it off at my house, then loaded my old one and dropped it off at my buddies house. He will swap the starters out and we may rebuild the old starter for his and sell it. Get a few dollars back anyways unless we just scrap it.

I've never seen the scotts up close but if it's built like my jd (looks the same to me) then it's got lots of metal in it. I was really impressed with the deck on mine. It weighs a ton!

Although I wish they had a little stiffer frame. My hood cracked because of frame flex but then again my yard looks like a dirt bike track that's been attacked by ground hogs.

Yes, this is a John Deere frame and all, just orange fiberglass instead of the green/yellow Deere colors with Scotts decals. It is made by John Deere for Scotts. All parts are ordered through John Deere... I may paint it all John Deere colors once it starts fading and all but for now its fine. Has some scratches but was used very little, all the anodized parts are still like new, no rust anywhere no oxidation anywhere, its a clean machine.
I need to clean the carb so I also need to get the mod/ser #'s off it and go grab a carb kit, might as well rebuild it if I take it apart to clean it, like I did with the others. I also want to get a cover for it since it will be outside til I get a garage built. Or maybe a small shed for the time being.
We started it and ran with starting fluid, just not getting fuel so I may get a pump rebuild kit too if it has one ( just a diaphragm ) that usually ruptures when they get old or fuel sits in them ( mower sat awhile ) But in all the mower looks brand new besides the scratches from brush.

Could be the pump like you say. Maybe start with fresh gas and a fuel filter, could be that and it probably needs it anyway. But you're right, if you pull the carb apart just get the kit. They are cheap.

I kept a motorcycle outside for a while under a cover. Even with the vent in the cover ground moisture kept collecting under the cover and all over the bike. I put a small tarp down under it and it helped a lot.

Yes, I always had the same issue with my bikes. The cover I want is short, just to keep rain off the seat and engine. If I can land one of these free sheds off craigslist, Ill go that route...better security.

Ok... 8am started removing carb. No pump, but this one has an electro magnetic cut off in the carb instead of a fuel cut off in-line. The electro magnetic cut off was bad, also the jets were gummed up so cleaned everything out with wire/carb cleaner. Installed new gaskets, electro magnetic cut off, fresh fuel mixed a little heavy with seafoam, new fuel lines and filter, new air filter. re-installed everything and Ba-Bam...the Beast fired right up, cut the yard...whooooo it was bad ass !!!!
The fuel that was in it didn't really even have a smell to it? Oddly enough I bet it wouldn't even burn...lol Well $100 more that I didn't want to spend but I got a mower that's going to last me a long, long time ! Finnished up at 9am

Awesome! Sounds like you got a good deal.
Cant beat a (approximately $3000) mower for $400 total.
The guy didn't know what was wrong with it besides saying his lawn was too small.... I think he wasn't inclined to fix it ( rich guy ) and would rather buy a new one...lol
I am very happy with this one, runs, cuts like a champ, very quiet as well, not a loud beast like the craftman was.
