My project

I was picking up lights for my tractor yesterday and thinking about the wiring. If you do have the dual circuit alternator the DC side only has like 3 amps so you might want to wire them off the AC side. I looked at the voltage on the AC side and it's only 14V so it shouldn't fry (right away anyway) any LED just might flicker a bit as you're only using ~1/2 the wave.

It would be good practice to add a resister to bring the voltage down to what the LED can handle and a diode to handle the AC voltage though as the LED is doing double duty as it is also serving as a rectifier blocking the reverse polarity that is not used without it.
The LED's I buy usually have the resistors built in, so shouldn't be a worry, it drops the 12v down to the 3v that they operate on. I actually had some wired to a 12v transformer in our saltwater tanks for the fish and worked great.

POS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Damn starter gear ( plastic pos ) blew up on it today. I got half the yard cut ( the easy flat level half ) so I had to weed whacker the entire hill and some....Aarrggghhhh !!!
I decided not to fix it, ( cheap $8 plastic gear or $75 new starter ) since its too small really to pull back up the hill so I am selling it for $150 with extra good 12hp B&S motor and other parts I stripped from another rider. I am just going to buy a bigger and newer one.

I managed to cut down 2 small trees but still have a lot more to go. I also mixed up some concentrated ROUNDUP and sprayed all the brush and weeds growing on the hills as I want to clear it all and easier to do without all the greenery. Should have 2 bare hills in the next week or 2.

Super easy to replace the nylon gear. Usualy replace all the plastic parts on top of the starter. They used nylon because the ring gear on the flywheel is aluminium and it's much simpler and cheaper to replace the starter gear than the flywheel gear. Good youtube videos on this process. Just lookup craftsman ii plastic starter gear

My ring gear is steel, yeah I replaced them before and I will to make the sale but I want a bigger rider anyways.

:laugh2: that's your problem then. Steal ring gear needs steal starter gear. Someone put the wrong part in.

Opps I did...lmao
Im man enough to say... I swapped one from the parts rider I had....
But I looked today and all starters come with the plastic gear now.

Yea, it's a pain. You can find them online. I don't know why you can't get them at sears anymore. Is the old starter the same setup with the steal gear? Could just swap the top assembly.

Yeah if I can find a steel gear???
Mines a 12hp and wont hardly pull up the hill, I found a 19hp I want and hoping to land? I may fix it just so I can sell it to help pay for the new one.

You can order a ring gear kit that has the current ring and starter gear. I'm not sure but I think the steel gears had a different pitch too so that might have lead to the starter gear not lasting long.

If you give me the engine number I can see if I can locate a steel starter gear for you as that is far simpler. Did the starters ends look the same? They had two styles, one with a roll pin and one with the c-clip.

Told my buddy I will fix the rider with parts from the one I gave him ( his has no brakes and he already monster trucked his fence a few times...lol ) I found a newer 17hp V-Twin 46" cut craftman rider for $300 because the guy moved and has a small yard now... so he made a nice offer to me that I cant resist. Should be picking it up thursday evening.

The 12hp should be plenty to get you up the hills. I have a 10hp version and it lugs my 210lbs up crazy hills at my place. Could be that it needs carb or electrical work as well. Sound like more than you're interested in putting into it.

Yea it should pull a decent hill ... mines 17hp and I've pulled a trailer with a engine in it a couple times ... it was so heavy it almost flattened the trailer tires lol

How are you going to get it home? Ride it?

I want video of the fence crushing  Agreed the 17 hp is plenty of power.

The 12hp I have will start up the hill and about half way it starts bogging then stops, you can feel it try but the wheels just stop turning and just pulsates somewhat. Belts not slipping or anything, just wont go and that's at full throttle !

Now the 17hp Im getting is a hydrostatic, so no more shifting gears, speed control at the pedal. It is a Scotts made by John Deere, so it should be a great mower as it was well maintained.

Im giving the craftman to my buddy, he is gonna swap parts as his rider wont stop, so all is a win win here.
