Here are my memories before computers:

1. Before computers, I watched Disney movies from the 1950s and 1960s with my classes in elementary school through a reel movie projector during "downtime" (no class). Today, kids watch movies through VCRs and DVDs. Also we didn't have "computer labs" back then, what we had were plays and talent shows to entertain us! I still remember 2 girls in the talent show doing a parody of "Hee Haw". :)

2. Before computers, I had to use a typewriter. I even had to use a typewriter in my "typing class" in high school and the beginning years of college (1980s)!

3. Before computers and the Internet, can you believe I had to use the library to find out information for my homework?? Today, we can find anything on the Internet for school. Today, we make friends all over the world from the Internet...back then, I found friends through school and in my neighborhood.

4. When computers first came out, so did the closed captioning devices for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. Before computers, I had to watch the actions on TV and decipher what the characters were saying....a lot of times I had to ask what they said. Today, closed captioning made it so much easier for me to understand TV.

5. Before computers, report cards were either typewritten or written with ink by teachers. Sometimes my teachers wrote in comments. :) Today, report cards are now all computerized.

6. Before computers and the answering machines, we had to miss calls on the telephone when we were out. A lot of times they would call back later. Today, answering machines takes your calls for you.

7. Before computers, we did not have barcodes on groceries. The grocery store clerk had to manually ring up your order, then count your change. Today, the machines gives you the total of change to give to the customer!

8. Before computers, we didn't have CDs to play music. I still remember the 8-track tapes, and the 45 records (little records with big holes in the middle) as a kid.

9. Before computers, I remember that libraries had these long files catalogued and organized in cabinets....and the files have the info to find each book. Today, these files are replaced on computers, and all you have to use is the "search button".

10. Before computers, we had recess and P.E. One of my favorite school memories was recess....I remember my 2nd grade class and I sang "Frosty the Snowman" around a pile of leaves during wintertime in Florida! Today, most schools do not have recess anymore, and P.E. are almost non-existant in some schools.

OMG Nancy, I remember all these things as well! I guess I am officially old. LOL

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH stop making me feel old. Geez Wheez I remmy all those thing before the technology came along.

Ah, yes, those memories...

He, he, we couldn't even do that! The Disney movies during the 50s and 60s were shown only in the theaters back when I went to elementary school (1956-63).

2. Before computers, I had to use a typewriter. I even had to use a typewriter in my "typing class" in high school and the beginning years of college (1980s)!
Yep. I learned to type on a manual typewriter in high school. I didn't use an electric typewriter until I joined the Navy.

6. Before computers and the answering machines, we had to miss calls on the telephone when we were out.
Yes. We had only one phone, and it was a party line that we shared with another unknown family. Ugh! They could listen to our private calls, or interupt our calls.

Yes, that part is sad. Too many kids are turning into couch tater tots (little couch potatoes).

I honestly don't remember a time when we didn't have computers, or things weren't computerized. I'm thirty-six, so I'm not that old, but I really think our society has been so bombarded with technology that, for some of us, our "conscienceness" has been so influenced by it that we just don't know any different anymore.

:dunno:

Just my two cents worth.

I was born in 1984...

so, about around 1991 when I was in elementary school, I used to use computers in a class where we only use those kind of plastic disks instead of "hard" disks...of course, the plastic disks were just too damn easy to break...lol.

as for the compact discs, they weren't around until the early 1990s either...I think.

Oh, and for the DVDs...I think they were somewhat created around late 1993, onto game consoles like the sega saturn(which was released in 1995 along with Playstation) and others until REAL DVDs would be around in late 1995 while the DVD players were like $500...damn!

as for the HDTVs, we've heard about them in production around late 1996, and some were released around late 1998, and some were great for clearer picture, better surround sound, etc... oh and for plasma screen televisons, were proably released about in the late 1990s also.
