I have 1 dog name is Iris. Her breed is Toy Poodle and 1/4 yorkie mixed. She know I am deaf since she was born. I got a puppy from my mom's dog's. My husband trained Iris how to wake me up. Iris is so smart! I am so spoiling brat on my dog. I treated her a Princess. She really cherish me so much more than my husband. LoL

That's good.

I had a dog like that. He would poke me with his nose if he wanted my attention instead of barking. :)

My girlfriend says my tomcat doesn't meow, and that's strange for a Siamese which is famous for being vocal. Whenever he wants my attention, he walks across my laptop or rubs against me. If I don't give immeduate attention, he will knead me with his paws and let me feel his claws.

That remind me of a story I read some years ago. A Deaf family has a dog who would bark at the door without voice. The dog seems to know that the family is deaf so why waste its voice.

Dogs, cats and other household pets often can tell if its master is deaf or not. It's fascinating.

My Whippet knows I am deaf - she would paw me gently if want to go outside for bathroom or want food. She never barks but just sits there and stares at me with her expressive eyes as if she is trying to communicate with me. If I am in a conversation, she will walk up behind me and paw back of my leg as if not want to interrupt the conversation but to have me look at her to see what she wants.

Sometimes I dont notice her gentle pawings and she would literally jump at me to grab my attention. LOL

Totally fascinating!

I wonder about deaf/hearing families. Will that be harder for pets to learn whether their masters are deaf or hearing?

I was always home when we had a couple different dogs while I was growing up. One dog was already grown, so she was always barking. I had no problems with that. However, another dog was a puppy when we got him. He was always around me. So, he learned that I was deaf. Later, my sisters got 2 dogs... both dalmatians... and they were always around my sisters. One was deaf and another was hearing, they could never be trained properly. So, I don't know if they truly knew I was deaf or not.

If I got a pet for my own place, I would want a cat. My only concern is that my mom is very allergic to cats. In one mind, I would be happy cuz I don't want her over at my place. In another mind, she's still my mom. ;)

My dogs know I am deaf, they understood what I signed such as 'potty', 'outside', 'cookie' (for treats), 'bed', 'sit', 'friend' (shake paws), 'play', 'drop it' (toys or any object) and not sure what else....ummmm

They would let me know when they need to go outside..they'll come up on my lap and give me 'hug' or Tinkerbell would use her nose under my arm, and letting me know she needs to go. I would ask them 'potty', they would jump on my hands to bite as 'soft bite'. So cute!

Aww Cute!! :giggle: Shshs Dont tell husband  LOL

Congrats!!

We put our hand in front of her to make her to come to us and she does not vocalling at all and she purrrrrrrrrrrrrrs when petting on her..... She is very affectionly cat! So cute!!!!!! :D But we will teach her more signs later!

At first, animals make noise to get human's attention but realize that they cant hear anyway so they have second choice is to come to you all and get your attention..

my dog, lucy knew that im deaf once she met me for first time. shes very smart dog that i ever had. she would jump at the door then run to me, jump up then run back to door to let me know that theres someone is at door. she would carry her bowl for more water or food, she would drag my pants to the door that she need to go out to doing her business. i miss her alot since she moved to new family.

and, now my two kittens.. they knew that im deaf also. they would bite my hands or feet or anything to getting my attention for petting. and everytime, if they want to wake me up and they would lick my nose or bite my nose or bite my hand. they are awesome heh

My dog always bark cuz she is loud barker. LOL my dog bark when ever someone is at the door. Two of my cats stopped meowing after I brought them home so they will come to me and get my attention. One of my other cat meow so loud my goodness I can hear him from the other room.

One time I accidetly left my cat in one of the closed door bedroom and she meowed all nite and I didnt hear her but my son heard her and open the door. LOL

That's gotta feel nasty when he does it at the adjoining intersections, huh? :D

Snickers, pictured to the left, is my hearing dog. She's a smart girl at eight years of age and is 1/2 Akita, 1/2 German Shepherd. She just met one of the most famous celebrities Friday night in Grand Forks, ND -- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. She thought Snickers was beautiful!

They tell me that technology (signal systems, et al) have replaced the function(s) of a pet. I have found the complete opposite to be true.

A pet brings forseen and unforseen responsibilities. In short, they become apart of your life, your function, and your inspiration. The loyalty of a pet, cat or dog, is overwhelming. I've had both. Pets are not stupid and, when you can connect on a communicative level with your pet, it's a wonderful, memorable thing.

No technology can replace a pet. No responsibility can be more than that of a faithful, loyal pet. There are people who will give you a scientific/behavioral observation (kneading of your skin by a cat = a kitten seeking milk or attentiveness by a dog = food). So what? I'd like to believe that they have a spirit/soul. I'd like to believe that they, above all else, choose me by choice.

Last November, I buried my 21-year old cat, who was a no-nonsense kind pet and knew, obviously, my misgivings. Soon, I am to accept that a very loyal and precious dog, due to health problems, will depart.

Having a pet is a wonder and most deep experience.

Sometimes, I wish I was a farmer.

That's exactly what you said about your dog. Same as my dog. I can sign language. She understand my signs what she need. She always tell me. I can see her act when she need go out for potty. All dogs have sense. My dog love me more than other hearing because too much noise and chattering. She like to be quiet with no voice. That's so cute!! She is very smart!

When I was younger I had a cat named Boggles. I thought she knew I was deaf b/c to me, she didn't make any sound. She just opened her mouth and no sound came out.
