DVD Player Sparks Murder Trial Against Driver

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - An Alaska man whose truck collided head-on with another vehicle, killing two people in 2002, is on trial for murder this week with prosecutors saying the man was watching a DVD while driving.

Erwin Petterson denies watching the movie "Road Trip" on a DVD player in his dashboard -- he says he took his eyes off the road to reach for a drink -- but if convicted in a trial going on this week in Kenai, Alaska, he could be sentenced to 99 years in prison.

i came across this article and found it to be the most stupidest thing a person could do!!!!

Hmmmm, I wonder how many deafies use their Sidekicks while driving? Just as dangerous.

yea i did use drive while i talk on sidekick til javapride blah at me, so i wont do it again.. but when stop light i read sidekick pgr.. better SAFETY!!!

I was talking to my sister the other day and found out she was talking to me via her sidekick and DRIVING, I told her she was nuts to do that. I informed her I wasn't going to talk to her until she got home as I wasn't going to enable causing an accident by talking to her whilst she was driving, no way!

TRUE alot of deafies would be talking on their sidekicks while driving! i think thats ALSO  !!!!

Ought to be a law against people using cell phones, sidekicks etc while driving.
it would be best if they get a call or need to make a call , its best to pull off the road and park..my hubby did that when he got a phone call on his cell phone on our way to Buffalo, NY and he pulled off the road. He said it is safer and besides he cant hear too good with all that road noises like trucks..
Another thing, why would manufacturers put DVD's in cars?? its really stupid!
its fine for back seat viewers NOT the drivers! heh!

In some states and cities it is now illegal to use a hand-held phone while driving.

Yes, it is safest to pull off the road to make and receive calls. If you can't answer the phone or Sidekick right away, use voicemail, Caller ID, or missed calls function to call back.

As the article stated, "To prevent drivers from watching movies while at the wheel, manufacturers include a feature that shuts down DVD players when vehicles are in motion, Shimek said. However, buyers who install their own players can override that feature." That's the problem, the car owners are installing the players in the dash.

Pretty sad that people can't resist entertaining themselves for a couple hours while driving, huh?

That is why I NEVER use my cell phone while I am on driving, I rather to pull over and use the cell phone if need urget.. For the risks of my life or my son life and my family.

Before you use your cell phone or Sidekick again while driving, please read this letter  :

"...I am a 29-year-old mother with an empty lap and a dreadfully aching heart. I have to tell you about my baby. Her name was Morgan Lee Pena and she was two and a half years old.... "

Yeah thats sad...i think the stupid driver should be convicted for vehicular murder!!..I feel sorry for her parents that they had to lose an only child..God bless them.

Let us be strong and smart. I know a lot of you are going OH WELL, YEAH, but I thibk it is important to try to stay alive. There are a lot of ways of doing that and not paying attention is NOT one of them.
There are a lot of commecials saying that you gotta practically DANCE in the car, for Chrissake, and that pisses me off.
Be smart, be a Deafie.
